Casares offers a range of options to consider when planning your trip: the Sierra Crestellina, a designated historic centre, beaches and regional cuisine. You can choose excursions to suit your interests without having to combine these different themes into a fixed itinerary.

Nature and coast: choose what interests you

The Paraje Natural Sierra Crestellina nature reserve lies within the municipality of Casares. The Sierra is home to a breeding colony of griffon vultures, making it another nature-focused option to consider when planning your trip. The hiking trail to the Sierra Crestellina starts at a turn-off about 500 metres from the junction leading to the entrance to Casares. This indicates where the trail begins and helps you find your way.

The beaches also differ in their features. Casares has four beaches in total with toilet and lifeguard services; check the service information before your trip. Playa Ancha is an urban beach with a promenade. Playa Piedra Paloma is designated as a dog beach, although you should check the local rules before visiting. Playa Chica can only be reached on foot. These differences can help you choose a beach that suits your planned activities, without assuming that all beaches have the same type of access.

Compare walks by route and length

For a shorter route, consider the linear trail to the fluviokarst canyon: it is 2.4 kilometres long and accessible year-round from the entrance via the Llanos de la Utrera. Access information may change due to nature conservation restrictions around the entrance to the Baños; check access conditions before your visit.

A longer hike runs from Genalguacil through shady forests, with views of the Strait of Gibraltar, to the historic centre of Casares, and is 20.5 kilometres long. Another hiking stage starts in Casares and passes through cork oak forests around the historic centre. When choosing a stage, you can compare the route from Genalguacil to Casares with the stage that starts in Casares and passes through cork oak forests around the historic centre.

Historic traces and cultural sites

The historic centre of Casares has been designated a Conjunto HistĂłrico ArtĂstico since 1978 and is also listed as an Andalusian cultural landscape. The earliest references to Casares Castle come from 13th-century Arabic sources. Those interested in archaeological history can also learn about the Lacipo site: it lies within the municipality and is identified with the Roman city of Lacipo in the Conventus Gaditanus.

The Centro Cultural Blas Infante has permanent exhibitions on the ethnographic history and archaeology of Casares and offers guided tours of the building. The birthplace of Blas Infante houses a permanent exhibition about episodes from his life and work and also serves as a tourist information office. Two other cultural highlights connect architectural history with local tradition: the Ermita de San Sebastián houses the image of Nuestra Señora del Rosario del Campo, the patron saint of Casares. The Fuente de Carlos III, also known as Fuente de la Plaza, was completed in 1785 as part of the 18th-century hydraulic reforms.

The Baños de la Hedionda also have both a historical and a landscape-related aspect. The bathing complex has had natural pools since 2016. Its history also includes the spring’s original Roman enclosure and adaptation. These details offer two different points of interest: the pools as they are today and the historical context of the spring. Plan your visit according to the applicable visitor conditions.

Regional cuisine and events

Casares cuisine includes gazpacho casareño. The cheeses of Sierra Crestellina are artisanally made from goat’s milk. At Degusta Casares, a food and culture fair in the historic centre, the weekend programme includes workshops on making morcilla casareña and cheese, as well as historical interpretation routes around the town. The 2026 edition took place on 18 and 19 April; dates and programmes may change from one edition to the next.

The Feria de Casares lasts four days and takes place on the first weekend of August in the historic centre. It includes dance events with orchestras at La Carrera and Plaza de España; exact dates and programmes may vary from one edition to the next. Another cultural option was the XIII Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz de Casares, which ran from 2 to 10 October 2026 and showed Andalusian feature films and documentaries, short films and photography, as well as offering educational activities. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for the relevant edition.
