Cortijos Nuevos is located in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park. The town is considered one of the main starting points for reaching destinations throughout the Sierra de Segura. For planning a specific day, it helps to distinguish between the routes around El Yelmo, regional road connections, and events with fixed dates.
Routes around El Yelmo and the surrounding area
Route 1, “Cortijos Nuevos–La Tiná Nueva,” starts in Cortijos Nuevos and follows the A-314 towards Beas de Segura. Route 2, “Cortijos Nuevos–Pico de El Yelmo,” offers one way to reach El Yelmo on foot and another by car. It follows a path to Castillo de Gutamarta and reaches the summit at an altitude of 1,809 metres.
There are numerous caves on the western slope of El Yelmo that can be explored through caving. There is also a launch site for free flight at the summit; flights depend on conditions and the rules in force. Route 3, “Cortijos Nuevos–Cortijo de Romillán,” heads towards the Cortijo de Romillán area and crosses the RĂo Trujala via the Puente del Moro. Check trail conditions before setting out; conditions on the forest road may also change.
Scenery and finding your way by road
From the road towards Beas de Segura, there are views of El Yelmo, Segura de la Sierra, and Hornos via the Collado del Puerto. The road connections also lead in different directions: the A-314 runs via the Collado del Puerto and Cañada Catena towards Beas de Segura and the N-322. The A-319 connects the area near Cortijos Nuevos with the Tranco Reservoir, Coto RĂos, and Cazorla. It is reached from the A-317; this junction is about two kilometres from Cortijos Nuevos.
Festivals and cultural traditions
A transhumance drovers’ route from the high mountains of the Sierra de Segura crosses Cortijos Nuevos from east to west.
