Jimena brings together several different discoveries: architectural history at the castle and church, a short walk to the Cueva de la Graja, the protected Pinar de Cánava and a guided olive oil experience. You can choose which of these themes shapes your stay based on your interests and travel dates. Alongside its buildings, the local culture is also represented by Los Tíos de Ricia: this festive ritual is listed for Jimena in Jaén’s Atlas of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Castle and church: different building phases

At Castillo de Jimena, the surviving keep is a striking architectural feature: the square tower is 20 metres high and was built by the Christians in the late 13th or early 14th century. Castillo de Jimena was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1985. If the tower is closed, visitors can ask for it to be opened at Jimena Town Hall. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to check whether this is possible before your visit.

The Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor can also be understood through its building history. It was built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries over a mosque dating from the Islamic period. Its three-aisled layout and chancel are Gothic and belong to the first building phase in the 15th century. The columns inside and the doorway on Callejón de la Audiencia, by contrast, date from the 16th century and are designed in the Renaissance style. The church thus reveals distinct building phases and stylistic features.

Nature and the route to Cueva de la Graja

The Pinar de Cánava is a natural monument in the municipality of Jimena, in the province of Jaén. The Junta de Andalucía protected it on 22 November 2001. It contains 121 Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis), which are, on average, more than two centuries old; some specimens are over 250 years old. Its protected status, tree species and age details give this nature experience a specific context.

Cueva de la Graja is a Bien de Interés Cultural and has been recognised as a National Historic Monument since 1924. The route to the cave is a 0.6-kilometre linear trail; the estimated walking time is about 30 minutes. This time is a guide for planning, not an exact requirement. Check the route details before setting out, as they may change.

September festivals and an olive oil experience

The procession with giants and big-head figures takes place every year on 7 September and starts at Plaza de la Constitución. The main festival in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios runs from 7 to 10 September. During the celebration, the image of the patron saint is brought from her hermitage to Jimena; on 10 September, a pilgrimage takes it back to the sanctuary of Cánava. Both dates make September a clear focus, but the multi-day celebration and the procession are separate events. Individual accompanying activities may vary; check the specific festival programme before travelling.

Another way to explore the region is the “AOVE sabor a sierra” experience at Aceites Oro de Cánava in Jimena. The guided tour of the facilities explains the entire olive oil production process, from the arrival of the olives to bottling. The experience also includes a sensory tasting, where you can discover the characteristics and nuances of oils from this mountainous area. If you would like to plan this experience, check the booking conditions in advance.

The options therefore offer clearly distinct focuses: the castle and church reveal different historical building phases, the route to Cueva de la Graja offers a short walking time as a concrete planning guide, and the olive oil experience focuses on production and tasting. The September dates are especially relevant for travellers who want to plan their visit around the festivals.
