Pinos Genil brings together an officially approved circular trail and the history of the Sierra Nevada tram. You can start the SL-A 393 “Agua que Fluye” trail in the Los Pinillos area or right in the town centre. The route follows the historic tram line, runs along the riverbank and passes through the old town. This means one walk takes in the former railway line, the riverside stretch and the streets of the town centre.
A circular trail between the river and the old town
The trail is accessible and suitable for Nordic walking, children aged three and over, and dogs. As accessibility may change following maintenance work, check the current conditions before your visit. Also check the trail’s status locally before your trip. The two possible starting points make Los Pinillos and the town centre alternative places to begin the same circular route.
Tram history at the former station
The restored former station building houses the Centro de InterpretaciĂłn del TranvĂa de la Sierra. As a cultural space, it presents part of Granada’s history through the Sierra Nevada tram and the people connected with it. A moving model recreates the tram’s route as it travelled through Pinos Genil. The centre therefore offers its own way to explore the history of the railway, while the trail follows the historic route outdoors.
The centre offers a guided tour lasting about an hour. The tour and its availability may change; check the current visiting conditions in advance.
A guided walk and local history
The guided route “Descubriendo a Berta Wilhelmi” lasts three hours and is an interpretive walk through the town centre and along the local SL-A-393. It is easy to moderately challenging and fully accessible. Booking and availability may change, so check the current offer in advance.
The Church of Santa MarĂa Magdalena also tells of the area’s different historical layers: it was built in the 16th century in the MudĂ©jar style over a former Muslim mosque. Its history therefore links the later church building with the site’s earlier use.
The Fábrica de la Luz was the first hydroelectric power station in the province of Granada. From 1898 until it closed in 1978, it supplied Granada and the surrounding areas.
The Fábrica de Papel del Blanqueo belonged to Berta Wilhelmi and included a hydroelectric power station as well as a large agricultural operation. In El Blanqueo, Wilhelmi also introduced mobile beekeeping, modernising honey production throughout the province of Granada. These accounts offer two distinct insights into local industrial history: electricity supply, and the links between papermaking, agriculture and beekeeping.
Views, festivals and getting there
Alto del Cerro de la Cruz is known for its splendid views. The festivities in honour of the Virgen del Rosario and San Roque take place on the first weekend of August. The exact programme may vary.
The number 390 intercity bus runs directly from Paseo de los Basilios to the centre of Pinos Genil. City bus 33 connects the town with Los Pinillos, where you can start the local trail. As transport information may change for operational reasons, check connections before travelling. The guided options also differ considerably in duration: about an hour at the interpretation centre, compared with three hours for the “Descubriendo a Berta Wilhelmi” route.
