Moclin offers a range of reasons to visit: a gorge carved by the Río Velillos, a circular route, a stage of the Camino Mozárabe de Santiago, fortifications, a church with a sanctuary and a contemporary cultural centre. When planning a stay, it helps to consider whether you are mainly interested in landscapes and outdoor activities or would also like to explore architectural history and culture. The routes also differ considerably: a circular route, a pilgrimage stage, a marked walking section after part of the journey by car, and a via ferrata requiring safety equipment each involve different practical considerations.

Gorge, Circular Route and Pilgrimage Stage

The Ruta del Gollizno PR-A84 is a circular route. Depending on the direction you choose, it starts in Moclín or Olivares. This means your starting point is linked to the direction in which you tackle the circuit. The Camino Mozárabe de Santiago offers a different perspective: Moclín is part of a stage of this pilgrimage route. When planning a hike, you can therefore choose between the character of a circular route and its place within a pilgrimage stage; each describes a different way of selecting a route.

The Tajos de la Hoz offer a distinct landscape focus. The RĂo Velillos has carved a sharply incised gorge here. The emphasis is therefore on a landscape shaped by the river. If you would like to include natural features in your stay, you can consider the gorge as a focus in its own right, separate from the routes of the hiking trails.

Fortifications and Church

Castillo de MoclĂn consists of two defensive sections: the outer walls and an alcazaba crowned by the Torre del Homenaje. This layout makes the site interesting for visitors who want to explore the design and different parts of a fortification. From the town centre, you can reach Castillo de MoclĂn via Calle Mota.

Below Castillo de Moclín, within the walled area of the town, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de Moclín was founded in 1501. Its location creates a tangible link between the church, the walled town and the castle. The church is also home to the Santuario del Santísimo Cristo del Paño. It houses a painting of Christ carrying the cross, measuring 2.64 × 2.21 metres. The church thus combines its founding history with a clearly defined religious and artistic focus.

Culture at the PĂłsito

PĂłsito de MoclĂn is now a cultural centre. It houses ethnographic objects and hosts activities. It complements the historical and religious themes with a place devoted to contemporary cultural use. If you would like to include architectural history and culture in your stay, the church and castle offer different points of interest from the ethnographic objects and activities at the PĂłsito.

Routes and Access: Key Differences

Mirador de MoclĂn is on the right-hand side of the N-432, just before the centre of MoclĂn when travelling towards Tiena. There is a small, safe parking area there. This roadside location differs from places that are reached on foot along a trail. When planning, you can take into account whether a destination is alongside the road or requires a walk.

Las Trincheras de Moclín is partly accessible by car; from there, a well-marked trail continues on foot for five to ten minutes. The route tells the story of the most recent war and offers views of strategically located landscapes. To reach Cueva del Goyino, a path leads downhill from Moclín through the Cañada de Corcuela to the archaeological site. Access and focus therefore differ between these destinations: a short walk follows the part of the drive to Las Trincheras, while the route to the cave descends from Moclín.

Another activity is the VĂa Ferrata de La Solana. It features ladders anchored to the rock, suspension bridges and exposed sections. Appropriate safety equipment is required to use it. This requirement is part of deciding whether to take on the activity: if you are considering the route, be sure to factor the necessary equipment into your plans.
