The Cueva del Agua lies at an altitude of around 1,750 metres on the southeast slope of Cabezo del Asno in the Sierra Harana, within the municipality of Iznalloz. Karst, crystal formations and a long history of use give the cave several points of interest. For planning your trip, you can also consider trails to a viewpoint and a mushroom museum, as well as buildings with preserved historic structures.
Cave, karst and history of use
Extensive crystal formations can be found in the eastern part of the Cueva del Agua. The Laguna del Glaciar is nearly 14 metres deep, and the cave passages form a labyrinth. These geological features make the cave a distinctive point of reference for the karst landscape in the area.
The protected ZEC Sierra de Arana covers 20,010 hectares, extends into Iznalloz and features large karst formations such as the Cueva del Agua de Iznalloz. Excavations in the cave revealed evidence of human use from the Chalcolithic through the Argaric, Roman and Arab periods to the present day. Here, geological formation and a long history of use can be seen side by side.
A steep access road between Cogollos Vega and Deifontes climbs for about six kilometres to the Cueva del Agua. If you are planning the drive, check the road conditions in advance.
Trails with different points of interest
The circular trail to Mirador del Sotillo is listed as 1,876 metres long and takes about 30 minutes; its difficulty level is moderate. These specific details can help you set aside time for the loop during your stay. The viewpoint is the destination of the circular trail.
The Las Corzas-La Melera trail has a different focus: it passes through diverse vegetation and an area of ornithological interest on its way to Pico de las Víboras at an elevation of 1,428 metres. The summit is a viewpoint with a 360-degree field of vision. If you would like your trail plans to focus especially on views, plant diversity and birdlife, this route description brings together several relevant themes.
The El Sotillo Museo Micológico trail ends at a museum dedicated to mushrooms. It starts in the El Sotillo area, about five kilometres southeast of Iznalloz via the Carretera de la Sierra. This gives the route a clearly named destination for travellers who want to choose based not only on views or scenery, but also on the subject of mushrooms.
Castle and church architecture
The area’s architectural history also offers specific points of interest. Castillo de Iznalloz preserves the remains of two attached towers and two large bastions. There is also a substantial remnant of the former rammed-earth wall.
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios was designed by Siloé. Construction began in 1549, with the involvement of Juan de Maeda, a pupil of Siloé, and the sculptor Alonso Hernández. The start of construction and the professionals involved give the church a distinct place alongside the older traces at the castle and the archaeological layers of the cave.
