Lanteira is one of the municipalities in the Province of Granada, within Sierra Nevada Natural Park. Its defining features include a circular route past medieval hydraulic mills, trails through Sierra scenery, a geological viewpoint, and a history of churches and mining. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these different highlights in mind: they range from an easy route to a winter feature for ice climbers.

Two Routes, Two Distinct Highlights

The Ruta de los Molinos Harineros is an easy circular trail. It passes old hydraulic mills of medieval origin, located on the Río del Pueblo and Río del Barrio rivers. The trail thus combines a specific route format with local industrial heritage. The term “hydraulic” itself refers to the use of water, while the mills’ medieval origins give them a historical context. Those interested in the history of craft and engineering structures will find a special connection to the landscape here.

The Ruta B: Lanteira–Postero Alto–Lanteira takes a different approach. It begins at Cerro Redondo above Lanteira, near the sports facilities. On its upper section, waterfalls freeze in winter; mountaineers value them for ice climbing. The routes therefore differ clearly in their stated features: the mill loop focuses on its circular layout, easy difficulty and mill history, while Ruta B is defined by its starting point at Cerro Redondo and seasonal ice climbing. This winter feature is not merely a general landscape motif, but is associated with a specific activity.

Sierra Scenery and Trails

El Peñón de Lanteira is an exceptional natural geological viewpoint. Its geological character is a distinct highlight alongside the trails. The route descriptions also focus on different landscape features: the Sendero al Área del RĂo Barro passes through Lanteira and runs through Sierra scenery. By contrast, the final section of the Guadix–JĂ©rez del Marquesado route towards Lanteira passes through old orchards, alongside terrace edges planted with almond trees, and along paths between scree and irrigation channels. The landscape therefore ranges from Sierra terrain to orchards and irrigated terraces. Check access before setting out on this final section, as access conditions may change.

Church, Remembrance and Mining History

A church stands in Lanteira’s main square. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and is among the last churches in the region built in the MudĂ©jar tradition. It has simple coffered ceilings with original polychrome decoration on the tie beams and the surrounding frieze. Its architectural context and specific design features complement each other: the church’s place among regional MudĂ©jar buildings is one aspect, and the decoration of its ceilings and structural elements is another.

Outside the church, a plaque and a bust commemorate Blessed Medina Olmos, who was born in Lanteira. The memorial thus connects a specific person and his origins with the history of the town. The Minas de Alquife mining complex offers a different historical perspective and also extends into the municipality of Lanteira. Its significance encompasses historical, geological, landscape, technical-industrial and ethnological aspects. Together with the church and memorial, the mining complex shows the diversity of topics in local history.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

If you are looking for hotels in Lanteira, your personal interests can guide your choice of destination: are you interested in the mill loop, the Sierra scenery, the winter waterfalls, or the history of architecture and mining? These themes offer different perspectives without requiring you to plan your trip around just one activity. This makes it easy to think of Lanteira as a destination based on what you most want to discover during your trip.
