At the Jardín Nazarí, architecture, gardens and water management come together: the residence is arranged around a central courtyard, with three orchards alongside it. The Junta de Andalucía lists the Jardín Nazarí as a historic garden among the Assets of Cultural Interest. An irrigation channel from Paseo del Nacimiento runs through the garden and supplies its orchards and the mill.

Gardens, the castle and local culture

The Castillo de los Ulloa adds military and architectural history to the cultural experience. It was rebuilt as a military structure in the 16th century; its layout is irregular and has seven sides. In 2003, the Castillo opened to the public as the Vélez de Benaudalla Heritage Interpretation Centre. It includes a permanent exhibition. As visiting arrangements may vary, it is worth checking before your visit.

The Neoclassical church also has a clear historical context: it was designed by Ventura Rodríguez and completed in 1778. The use of palmetto leaves to make brooms is also part of local tradition. In Vélez de Benaudalla, the leaves were traditionally used for this craft.

Compare walks and hikes

The Ruta Las Torcas is a 5-kilometre circular trail of low difficulty that can be walked year-round. By contrast, the Ruta la Haza del Señor, also known as the Sendero de las Minas, is 20 kilometres long, linear and highly challenging. Both routes are listed as suitable for year-round walking; trail conditions may change. Check them before setting out.

The Ruta de los Molinos is described as a walk of about two and a half hours. It leads to the Molino de Abarca. The associated Cortijo is considered restored and was formerly equipped with a bread oven. Note that some of the mills on this route are private or in poor condition.

Waterways, village scenery and landscapes

The Ruta del Nacimiento passes the Lavadero del Alambique and the Nacimiento spring, then follows the irrigation channel. In the Barrio Árabe, the appeal of the walk lies in the route itself: the Ruta del Barrio Árabe passes through narrow, whitewashed streets and by small squares.

The Ruta la Explanación-Río Guadalfeo leads to the Explanación, also known as Playa de Vélez. The area is considered a recreational spot for swimming and families; water conditions may vary. Another scenic route leads to the Fuente del Algarrobo. After about two kilometres, it reaches the Barranco del Algarrobo on the western side of the Sierra de Lújar. The path to the spring crosses a main road and follows an uphill trail. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

Caving takes place in the Tajo de los Vados area, including at the Sima Redonda and in the Cueva del Barranco de Iñate. Appropriate equipment and expertise are required.

Plan your journey and festival dates

The A-44 motorway runs above Vélez de Benaudalla and has two access roads to the town. Traffic conditions and signage may change; take this into account when travelling by car.

The main day of the Fiestas de San Antonio de Padua is 13 June; the festival includes a performance of Moros y Cristianos. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the dates and programme for the specific year in advance.
