Caniles can be discovered through a wide variety of routes and themes: from a cultural route through the town to a long mountain-biking loop that leads into the Sierra de Baza Natural Park. Historic buildings, a local tradition and the region’s mycology round out the options. When planning your visit, consider whether you would most like to get to know Caniles through its routes, history or nature-related attractions.

Routes between the town and the natural park

An 11.3-kilometre cultural and tourism trail starts in the town centre and follows a circular route. It takes in historic irrigation channels, the Fuente de los Caños and several mills. The named channels include Aguacía, Alcaicía, Guagüix, Manzanil and Cordobica, along with some of their branches. The route brings together water engineering and mills as local points of interest.

The municipal Los Olmos–Morax route is 12.00 kilometres long and rated moderate. The Ruta Morax is listed as starting and ending on the GR-8101 shortly before Los Olmos. It passes through the Arroyo de Moras basin, east of the road from Caniles to Escúllar. The cultural route is close in length to the Los Olmos–Morax route, while the Caniles mountain-biking loop, at 63.2 kilometres, is on a very different scale.

The Sendero del Tullio leads to the foot of the Sierra de Baza Natural Park and passes the Arroyo Bodurria. There is a water spring there, but you should not assume its water is safe to drink. The Sendero GuadalopĂłn crosses the Puente de Hierro, which the railway once ran over, and passes a hundred-year-old acacia. Its size and impressive growth are highlighted as distinctive features.

The circular Caniles mountain-biking route is 63.2 kilometres long. It starts at the Centro MicolĂłgico in Caniles and leads into the Sierra de Baza Natural Park. As the terrain and access conditions may change, it is advisable to check both before setting off. You should also check trail markers, access and trail conditions before taking any of the municipal routes. The GR-8101 regional road runs from Caniles through the natural park towards AlmerĂa; road conditions can also change.

Buildings and traditions in Caniles

The present-day church of Santa María y San Pedro stands on the site of Caniles’ former main mosque. In front of the church, at 5 p.m. on Saint Sebastian’s Day, the event known as the Robo del Santo takes place. During the event, one person receives the processional cross and becomes the Hermano de San Sebastián. The role carries the responsibility of organising and funding the following year’s celebrations.

The Ermita de San Sebastián also brings together architectural and local history: the single-nave Mudéjar hermitage was built in the 18th century on the site of a former Arab cemetery. The Torre de Caniles is known as a historically significant watchtower and is also called Albacara del Hadjí. The Torre de los Moros is 8.5 metres high and has loopholes and a masonry vault. It can be reached via the road from Baza to Caniles.

The Pósito de Caniles is part of the municipality’s cultural heritage and preserves more than two centuries of history. The Pósito Real de Caniles dates from the second half of the 18th century. Its extensive renovation has been completed, after which it was intended for use as a cultural and multi-purpose building. These buildings and the recurring Saint Sebastian tradition provide further ways to explore the town’s history beyond its routes.

Mycology and wine

The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn MicolĂłgico provides information about mushrooms found in the surrounding region, including the popular nĂscalos. The centre runs excursions where visitors can explore mycology in the Baza region on site, and it hosts the Jornadas MicolĂłgicas del Altiplano Granadino. If you would like to plan your visit around one of the Jornadas, check the dates before you travel.

Another way to connect with a local theme in Caniles is the Caniles–Molineras route, which leads to Bodegas Vilaplana, where you can enjoy wine. Check locally for visiting arrangements before you go.
