The hiking route through the Tajos de CacĂn runs between CacĂn and the Embalse de los Bermejales, is 9.4 km long and is rated moderate to challenging. The out-and-back distance is twice as long. The terrain includes sections with safety ropes for climbing up and down rocks, suspension bridges and a stretch beneath an overhanging rock. The route is not recommended when it rains because of the risk of the river swelling. Check the trail conditions locally before setting out.
Hiking in the Tajos and along the RĂo CacĂn
A route along the RĂo CacĂn follows the river and offers opportunities to enjoy the landscape, flora and fauna. At the Tajos del RĂo CacĂn, suspended rope and wooden bridges cross the river, and waterfalls can also be seen there. Fixed ropes help hikers negotiate some changes in elevation, while large rock formations tower over the riverbed. The Puente del RĂo CacĂn was built in 1940 with a central arch and several semicircular stone arches. It is a crossing point for several hiking trails in the area.
Archaeology and Architectural History
The Cueva de CacĂn is a Neolithic archaeological site in the area known as Los Tajos. The Vaso de CacĂn is on display at the Museo ArqueolĂłgico de Madrid. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores was rebuilt after the 1884 earthquake. These three landmarks represent archaeological traces, an object now on display in Madrid and the church’s history of reconstruction.
Festivals Throughout the Year
If you want to plan your trip around a celebration, the dates vary considerably. The patron-saint festivities take place in early August in honour of the Virgen de los Dolores and last four days. At the weekend verbena, visitors are provided with food, and there is live music and DJ sets. The programme may vary from year to year. Check the dates before planning your trip around them.
The Merendicas are celebrated on 20 January in honour of San Sebastián. Residents and visitors gather in the surrounding countryside for a day together. La Candelaria is celebrated on the night before 2 February with bonfires and the burning and twirling of esparto-grass torches.
