Baúl offers several distinct reasons to visit: railway heritage at the Puente de El Baúl, the gorge of the Baúl stream and archaeological traces, including a megalithic necropolis. Traditional patron-saint festivals are another feature. When choosing accommodation, it may help to first decide whether you want to focus your stay on the landscape, the history of technology, archaeological heritage or festival culture.
Railway heritage at the Puente de El Baúl
The Puente de El Baúl is a complex wrought-iron structure. It was designed in the workshops of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel and assembled in 1907. It is one of the main attractions on the Vía Verde Sierra de Baza. The paths along the former railway line at the bridge are used to take in the landscape of northeastern Granada and the surviving elements of its industrial railway heritage.
The Vía Verde Sierra de Baza follows the former route of the Guadix–Baza railway line; train services on this line ended on 31 December 1984. This brings two distinct periods together along the route: its former function as a railway line and its current focus on natural and railway heritage. The bridge provides a tangible reference point for industrial history, while the trail follows the course of the former line.
The Vía Verde and the gorge route: different focuses
The Vía Verde Sierra de Baza is primarily recommended as a cycling route, though it can also be explored on foot, including in sections. It is described as a moderately difficult route, 42.1 kilometres long, with 316 metres of positive elevation gain. Seasonal conditions may affect the practical difficulty, so check the local route status before setting out.
The Cañones imposibles route has a different focus: it includes the gorge of the Baúl stream in the settlement of Baúl and follows the stream through a deeply cut gorge to a natural narrow passage with a spectacular metal bridge. The route introduces visitors to geomorphology and fluvial-karst incision. Here, the focus is on landforms and how they were formed, whereas the Vía Verde combines railway history with cycling or walking selected sections. Check whether the Cañones imposibles route is available before booking.
Castle, protected area and megalithic tombs
The Castillo de Baúl is a medieval military castle on Cerro Testigo. The remains include sections of wall and a rectangular tower. The site is in an advanced state of decay, but important elements have survived; its condition may change over time. The castle adds medieval military architecture to the area’s railway and landscape history.
An area designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) lies between the Baúl and Valdiquín gorges, next to the railway bridge and the centre of Baúl. Near the town centre, a megalithic necropolis, also designated as a BIC, includes six megalithic tombs. These two designations clearly locate the cultural heritage, while distinguishing between the character of the landscape area and that of the necropolis.
Patron-saint festivals and travel planning
Baúl celebrates traditional patron-saint festivals in honour of San Isidro Labrador and the Virgen de Fátima. The programme for the 2026 edition included regional dances, ribbon races, music, sports and traditional games. Activities may differ from one edition to another. If you would like to plan your trip around the festivals, check the dates and programme for the edition you wish to attend.
The patron-saint festivals provide a distinct seasonal focus.
