Taberno can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: the Sendero del Picacho leads to a viewpoint overlooking the town, while the Sendero Cerro Alto is a circular route. A botanical park, the Museo del Campo, the Iglesia de San José and a goat experience add nature, local history and cheese-making to the mix. When looking for accommodation, it may help to decide first which of these discoveries you would like to shape your stay.

Hiking trails and botanical surroundings

The Sendero del Picacho leads to the Las Morras viewpoint, at an altitude of almost 800 metres. From there, you can enjoy views of Taberno and its distinctive surroundings. The Sendero Cerro Alto offers a different focus: the trail passes through the Parque Botánico de Taberno to the bed of the Rambla del Aceituno, forming a circular route that returns to the town near the town hall. When choosing between the two routes, you can be guided by the kind of outing you prefer: Las Morras offers a viewpoint overlooking Taberno, while Cerro Alto combines a circular route, park and rambla bed. This gives you two distinct points of reference for making your choice without assuming a fixed itinerary.

The Parque Botánico de Taberno is dedicated to preserving and promoting the region’s native flora. It offers a peaceful setting that is also accessible to people with reduced mobility. Those interested in regional plants will find a different focus here than at the Las Morras viewpoint.

Museum, church and goat experience

The Museo del Campo de Taberno is housed in a former school building. It was founded in 1998 to collect and preserve objects used by the region’s ancestors during the two preceding centuries. Exhibits include agricultural equipment, tools, machinery, household items and objects used in everyday life. The collection currently contains at least 2,000 objects, most of which have been loaned by residents of the municipality for public use. Work tools and household objects offer different ways to explore everyday life in the region in earlier times.

A guided visit to Taberno also includes the 18th-century Iglesia de San José. Alongside the museum’s objects, this historic church building offers another cultural highlight to choose from.

The goat experience focuses on making goat’s cheese using a method practised in Taberno for more than 100 years. As part of the experience, visitors are taken to the La Pastora de Taberno cooperative for a tour of the factory. Visitors can buy several varieties of goat’s cheese at La Pastora. Feeding the goats is also part of the experience. For travellers interested in how regional foods are made, this offers a different way to explore the area than a museum or church visit: the focus here is on cheese, the cooperative and the goats.
