Tabernas can be explored from more than one perspective: the Desierto de Tabernas is shaped by eroded badlands, ravines and wadis; at the same time, architecture, archaeology and traditional cuisine invite you to discover the town and its surroundings through different themes. When planning, it is worth comparing the trails and activities: some routes can be described mainly by their terrain, while others have specific distances and elevation gains.

Desert Landscape and Trails

The Desierto de Tabernas has been a protected natural area since 1989. It is of particular botanical and faunal value, including rare species and the endemic Tabernas cross-flower, Euzomodendron bourgaeanum. So if you are interested in the landscape, you will find not only the visible forms of the badlands here, but also distinctive plant and animal life.

The almost flat Sendero del Desierto PR-A 269 runs through the rambla valleys of the Desierto de Tabernas. Its gentle gradient is a useful point of reference when planning your hike; check local trail conditions before setting out. Another hiking trail starts and ends at the municipal tourist information office and leads to the Rambla de los Molinos, which joins the Rambla de la Sierra.

The Sendero La Serrata PR-A 481 also has a distinctive connection to the landscape: its entire route lies within a Natura 2000 ZEC site and forms an ecological corridor between the Sierra Alhamilla natural area and the Desierto de Tabernas natural area. The Tabernas–Lucainena de las Torres cycling stage has a different focus. It runs along the foot of the northern slope of the Sierra Alhamilla through arid terrain and rambla valleys, passing olive groves and cortijos. At 22.9 kilometers with 350 meters of elevation gain, the stage’s distance and ascent are specified; technical route data may be updated, so check with the relevant authority beforehand.

Architecture, Archaeology and Visit Planning

The Iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. The Mudéjar church has three naves and portals in Renaissance and Mannerist styles. Its furnishings include the image of the Virgen de las Angustias and an altarpiece made of white and green marble in the chapel of the Virgen del Carmen. D. Policampo made this altarpiece in 1865.

The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn Terrera Ventura y Desierto de Tabernas explains two different subjects: the geological formation of the desert and the Copper Age society of the Los Millares type. It lived in the settlement of Terrera Ventura in the 3rd millennium BC. The history of the landscape and the human past thus offer different ways to explore the region.

The Castillo de Tabernas is a municipal BIC monument. A paved path next to the Municipal Sports Pavilion leads to it; from its position, the castle overlooks the town, the desert and the surrounding sierras. It has been temporarily closed to visitors since January 2026 due to archaeological work and restoration. Check before visiting to see whether the work has been completed.

Cuisine and Guided Experiences

Traditional Tabernas cuisine includes Olla de trigo, sopa de ajo almeriense, Gazpacho, cocido de morcilla, Gachas, Remojones, Ajillo de papas, Caldo colorao and Gurullos. Gurullos is the local name for a bread-based dish. Including regional cuisine in your travel plans gives you a specific culinary reference point, without implying that any particular restaurant offers these dishes.

The Almazara Castillo de Tabernas offers a guided tour of natural and traditional olive oil production, as well as tastings of various extra virgin olive oils. The Ruta en 4x4 por el Desierto de Tabernas is also described as a guided activity: it travels through rambla valleys and different landscape formations within Tabernas, with stops featuring explanations about geology, history, scenery or film. As these are current tourist activities, it is best to confirm availability before your trip.
