Los Albaricoques combines a history of Western films with trails that reveal different aspects of the landscape. The village is known as a filming location for Westerns under the name “Albaricoques de Cine.” When planning a stay, you can therefore consider the village’s film history, the literary and historical connections of nearby Cortijo del Fraile, and the landscapes along two walking trails as separate points of interest.
Western Films and Cortijo del Fraile
Films such as “La muerte tenĂa un precio” and “Por un puñado de dĂłlares” made Los Albaricoques a natural film set. Local residents took part in the filming of this era of cinema in Los Albaricoques. The involvement of people from the surrounding area adds a local perspective to the film titles.
Nearby is Cortijo del Fraile, which is associated with the “Crimen de NĂjar” of 22 July 1928 and Federico GarcĂa Lorca’s play “Bodas de Sangre.” The cortijo’s traditional architecture includes a chapel, a crypt, arcaded courtyards, wells and cisterns. This brings together a historically dated event, a literary connection and specific architectural features.
For cultural context, it is worth making a distinction: the Western productions and the participation of local residents relate to Los Albaricoques itself; the connection to “Crimen de NĂjar” and “Bodas de Sangre,” as well as the architectural features mentioned, belong to nearby Cortijo del Fraile. In this way, the village’s film history and the literary and architectural connections of the cortijo remain distinct points of interest.
Walking Trails and Landscape
To reach the Sendero Requena, take the ALP-824 track from Los Albaricoques towards Rodalquilar. After 4.6 km, a turn-off leads to Cortijo de Requena; the trail entrance is at the cortijo. Along the way, you can see the remains of mining and grain cultivation. From the elevated, table-shaped summit, there are views of the Mediterranean. The route thus combines specific directions with visible traces of past land use and a viewpoint.
The Cortijo del Fraile–Montano–Hornillo walking trail has a different access route: from Los Albaricoques, reach it via a paved track; the trail begins at Cortijo del Fraile. It passes through mountains, agricultural plains and natural areas that are predominantly steppe-like. Unlike the Sendero Requena, where traces of mining and grain cultivation and views of the Mediterranean stand out, here the changing landscape types and their predominantly steppe-like character define the scenery.
The Aljibe del Cortijo El Campillo de Doña Francisca II is also located on the route from Los Albaricoques to Rodalquilar.
The cycling and walking path project connects Los Albaricoques with Cortijo del Fraile and Rodalquilar; it is under construction and aims to promote sustainable mobility and enhance the landscape of the nature park.
