El Pozo De Los Frailes combines a vivid history of water use with hiking trails through the landscape of Cabo de Gata-NĂjar Natural Park. The restored Noria historically ensured the water supply for people and livestock in this extremely dry environment. This gives the village two clear themes to consider when planning your visit: the technical and communal use of water, and trails whose descriptions range from habitats in the protected area to volcanic slopes and sea views. You can focus on the heritage or choose routes based on landscape and nature watching.
Water Technology and Local History
The Noria del Pozo de los Frailes information point is in the town center beside the restored Noria. The small kiosk is in a landscaped area and provides information about Cabo de Gata-NĂjar Natural Park. The complex of the Noria, washhouse and livestock watering trough shows how an animal-powered waterwheel channelled water to the public washhouse and public livestock watering trough. The individual features reflect different uses: water served the needs of people and livestock, as well as public washing and watering.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a large landowner had the complex built to irrigate his land with surplus water. It remained in use until the 1980s. The Molino del Pozo de los Frailes is recorded as dating to 1805. The local history therefore brings together different points in time: the year associated with the mill and the Noria complex’s use, which continued for decades.
Hiking Trails with Different Highlights
Hiking trail S04 crosses various habitats within the Cabo de Gata-NĂjar Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. It also directly connects El Pozo De Los Frailes with San JosĂ© via the AL-3108; you can join the trail from either town. S06 Escullos–Pozo de los Frailes has a different focus: the route crosses hilly terrain between volcanic mountains, offers sea views and passes abandoned grain fields. The descriptions help you choose between a connection between two towns that also crosses different habitats and a route whose terrain and landscape features are specifically described.
Cerro de los Frailes, considered the largest volcanic outcrop in the natural park, lies along hiking trail S06. Its two volcanic domes reach 493 meters. The wildlife is also described in detail: on S06, you can spot, among other species, the little bustard, kestrel, stonechat—a migratory bird related to the European stonechat—ocellated lizard and horseshoe whip snake. In addition to sea views and volcanic formations, birds and reptiles are also highlights of the route.
Getting Your Bearings for Your Stay
