Huércal-Overa Castle combines medieval history with a distinctive archaeological detail: a motif incised in stucco that has been identified as “Hom” or the “Tree of Life.” Along with the example at Gibralfaro Castle in Málaga, it is one of the few documented examples on the Iberian Peninsula. Paths through the municipality and the Vía Verde also offer different ways to explore its history and landscape.

Castle, church and archaeological traces

Huércal-Overa Castle reached its greatest importance during the Nasrid period; most of the surviving structures date from the 14th century. Since 1985, the castle has been classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The incised “Hom” or “Tree of Life” motif adds a specific archaeological dimension to a visit and connects the castle with one of the few documented comparative examples on the Iberian Peninsula.

The Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción offers a different architectural perspective. The parish church has two towers and is Baroque in style, with a design inspired by Murcia. Construction was planned in 1709 and completed in 1739. The church is listed as a monument in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage.

Yacimiento Huércal la Vieja is a fortified grain store on a summit in the Sierra Almagro. The site offers insight into life during the Muslim period, particularly in the 12th and 13th centuries. It served the farming communities of Huércal and Overa as a communal storage place for agricultural produce. Thus, alongside the castle, the history of communal food storage and agricultural life also take centre stage.

Several paths lead to the Civil War trenches in the municipality. A route to the trenches at Las Norias leads to three surviving structures, which remain in their original condition. The trenches around Huércal-Overa Castle can also be visited. These structures include underground, gallery-like sections around six metres long.

Routes on the Vía Verde

Details on length and difficulty can help you choose a specific route: La Sierrecica is 13.3 kilometres long and rated moderate. The Vía Verde de Huércal-Overa connects Huércal-Overa and Almendricos over 18 kilometres. It is therefore the longer of the two routes; the moderate rating applies to La Sierrecica.

The Vía Verde paths are signposted. Information boards at various points feature QR codes that provide access to the full routes; check the local signage when you arrive. The town council has also introduced five routes for visitors on the Vía Verde within the municipality. The Vía Verde is considered accessible and has information boards, rest areas, play areas and places to eat. As individual facilities may change, it is advisable to check their current status before your visit.

Water technology and local festivals

The Museo del Agua explores the history of water and water technology. Its scope ranges from Roman and Arab waterworks—including underground water channels, waterwheels and cisterns—to modern systems such as drip irrigation, hydroponics and soil-free cultivation. Outdoor areas include a waterwheel and a working fountain, among other features. Inside, additional equipment, mechanisms and educational information boards complement the exhibitions.

The annual Día del Villazgo commemorates Huércal-Overa’s independence from the city of Lorca, achieved on 3 March 1668. The festival includes historical reenactments that revisit key moments in the town’s history. If you would like to combine your trip with the celebration, check the date and programme in advance.

Local food culture also offers recurring events. Many people gather at La Glorieta, Plaza de la Constitución, to prepare Huércal-Overa’s traditional Christmas empanada. The white empanada is made with almonds. An annual festival promoting tapas culture showcases produce from the local huerta, while visitors can also discover some of the municipality’s important bars and restaurants. It is worth checking the dates of these events before your trip.
