The Sabina Albar, a natural monument in Chirivel, is estimated to be 600 to 1,000 years old. Together with a hiking trail, Roman remains and a church with an unusual architectural history, it makes this a place where landscape and culture go hand in hand. Visitors interested in nature, archaeology and architectural history will find a variety of points of interest in Chirivel; the information about the hiking trail also provides a specific timeframe and distance.

Natural Monument and La Sabina Hiking Trail

The Sabina Albar natural monument is a specimen of the species Juniperus thurifera. It is considered unique in the province of Almería due to its size and estimated age of 600 to 1,000 years. It is located in the Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park and is also part of the ZEC and ZEPA protected areas of Sierra María-Los Vélez.

The La Sabina hiking trail begins near the Cortijada del Mojonar in Chirivel. In the natural park, it offers the chance to observe the three species of juniper: sabina mora, sabina albar and sabina rastrera. The route is linear; the listed distance is 9,768 kilometres one way, the duration is five hours, and the difficulty is moderate. The distance, one-way route and duration provide a specific basis for planning your time. The trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Chirivel Corridor, a historic route between the Levante and Andalusia, as well as the Sierra de las Estancias and the Filabres. As trail conditions can change locally, it is best to check them before setting out.

Roman Remains and Architectural History

Different historical periods come together in Chirivel. The El Villar archaeological site was crossed by the Roman road Vía Augusta, which connected Cartagena with Cádiz. El Villar is believed to have consisted of a group of Roman villas. Objects and architectural remains found there include a statue from the 2nd century BC, a geometric mosaic, a storage silo and domestic rooms. El Villar is designated an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of an archaeological zone.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Isidoro offers a different perspective on architectural history. Built at the end of the 19th century, it combines neoclassical and historicist styles. Its architecture is defined by three naves and a tower attached to the north side. The church also houses a painting attributed to Luis Tristán, who is considered a pupil of El Greco.

The Casa del Minero adds another architectural highlight: the house was built in 1906 as a modernist Art Deco residence, commissioned by a mine owner from Cartagena. Decorated walls, ceilings and doors, along with a wrought-iron staircase, are among its described features. The remains of the Nasrid-era Velad Al-Ahmar fortress lie on Cerro del Castellón and add another historical period to the area’s heritage.

Festivals and Cuisine in Chirivel

Music and festive traditions also offer a glimpse of local life. At the patron saint festival in honour of San Isidoro, the songs of the Rosario de la Aurora are sung in the penultimate week of August. At dawn, music is carried through the streets of the village. Groups perform the Cuadrillas de ánimas at important festivals, accompanying the songs with music; the tradition is especially associated with the Christmas season.

Chirivel’s characteristic dishes include Potaje de trigo, Asado de cabezas and Migas. Traditional sweets range from pastries of Arab origin and Gachas to Tortas de la Virgen, Roscos de naranja, Roscos chiri and Barquillos. Nature and hiking can thus be combined with archaeological and architectural discoveries, as well as regional food and festive traditions.
