Gwangju combines international art and guided city walks with Mudeungsan in the wider surrounding region. For trip planning, cultural events and train connections provide two concrete points of reference; you can also consider whether to allow time for a longer stay on the mountain. If you are looking for hotels in Gwangju, you can first decide on the focus of your trip: art and the city, or the region’s landscape as well.

Art and guided walks

The National Asian Culture Center (ACC) is an international organization for art and cultural exchange. It connects past and present cultural arts with forward-looking and progressive art, aiming to promote Gwangju as an Asian hub. The Gwangju Biennale complements this focus as an international art exhibition held in Gwangju every two years. If you want to plan your trip around a particular edition, check its dates, as the editions and dates change.

Free guided walking tours that require advance reservations are also offered in Gwangju. The individual routes last 1 to 1.5 hours. The “금도깨비극장” tour includes, among other places, the 5·18민주화운동 기록관. As reservations and schedules may change, check the current offerings before adding the tour to your daily itinerary.

Getting there by train

Gwangju Songjeong Station is an important transport hub in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. All trains on the Honam and Gyeongjeon lines stop there, including KTX services from Yongsan and Mokpo. If you are arriving by train, the station is a practical point of reference for your planning. Check the timetable for your travel date before coordinating departures with other plans.

Recreation area and views

Jisan Recreation Area is a resort and amusement park in a natural setting. A lift and monorail take visitors up to an octagonal pavilion viewing platform. From there, you can enjoy views of Mudeungsan and Gwangju’s cityscape. Operating conditions may vary, so check which facilities are operating on your planned visit date.

Mudeungsan in the surrounding region

Mudeungsan lies on the border between Gwangju and Damyang and Hwasun counties. Among its 20 geological sites are the Seoseokdae, Ipseokdae, and Gwangseokdae columnar cliffs; the mountain also encompasses 42 historical and cultural sites. Its seasonal landscape is also diverse: azaleas bloom in spring, tiger lilies in summer, maple trees and silver grass in autumn, and snow covers the mountain in winter. Endangered species found on Mudeungsan include the Eurasian otter, Siberian flying squirrel, and Akebia fruit orchid.

The first hiking course on Mudeungsan offers views of Gwangju city center and the mountain’s silhouette. From Jeungsimsa Temple at the foot of Mudeungsan, it takes 2 to 3 hours to reach the summit. These different time frames offer a useful comparison: a guided walk takes 1 to 1.5 hours, while the route from the temple to the summit takes 2 to 3 hours. This comparison helps distinguish a short activity from a longer stay on the mountain.
