At Sokcho Beach, a clearly defined coastal focus begins: the 1.74-kilometer Sokcho Oeongchi Badahyanggiro Trail runs from there to Oeongchi Port. Nearby, a natural lagoon, the hand-pulled Gaetbae ferry, and places for folk culture and cuisine offer further points of interest. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you want to focus your stay more on the beach and coastal trail, on culture and food, or on a broader landscape perspective.

Beach, Lagoon and Coastal Trail

Sokcho Beach opened in 1976 and is one of Korea’s representative beaches. Clear seawater, shallow water, and a gently sloping shore describe its physical character. The beach is also the starting point of the Sokcho Oeongchi Badahyanggiro Trail. This makes it possible to experience the coast not only as a beach setting, but also as a specific walk.

Yeongnangho, a natural lagoon with a circumference of 8 kilometers and an area of 360,000 pyeong, is also located in Sokcho. The circumference and area provide two different measures of this landscape. The beach and lagoon thus represent different waterscapes that shape Sokcho as a destination: on one hand, the beach with its described shoreline and water features; on the other, a distinct natural lagoon.

The Oeongchi Trail runs along the sea and includes both wooden boardwalk sections and unpaved paths. The route therefore changes surface along the way. The Oeongchi section also has four themed paths: Bamboo Meditation, Sky Deck, National Security Experience, and Rock Observation. The trail is thus characterized not only by its length and endpoints, but also by its named themes. For planning, this offers a specific distinction between a general beach visit and a walk with a set route and its own themes.

Folk Culture and Places to Eat

Abai Village is located in Sokcho. The village was founded during the Korean War by North Korean refugees, mainly from Hamgyeong-do Province. A hand-pulled Gaetbae ferry crosses the waterway in Sokcho Port between downtown Sokcho and Abai Village in Cheongho-dong. The named endpoints make the ferry a specific link between downtown and the village.

The Abai Village restaurant street serves Hamheung-style cold buckwheat noodles, stuffed squid, and North Korean sausage soup. These dishes offer a tangible starting point for planning where to eat locally. Those interested in the village’s history can consider the restaurant street as a distinct culinary focus, without treating the dishes as a general statement about the cuisine of the entire region.

Sokcho City Museum offers a different way to experience culture: visitors can see and experience Sokcho’s distinctive folk culture for themselves. This gives visitors two different possible cultural focuses: Abai Village is associated with its history, while the museum combines viewing with first-hand experience of local folk culture.

The Seorak Area as a Broader Perspective

For a view beyond Sokcho, the Seorak Special Tourist Zone offers a regional framework. Sokcho accounts for the largest share of this zone’s area; the zone offers visitors both seascapes and coastal lagoon landscapes, as well as the mountain scenery of Seoraksan. This regional perspective expands on the coastal and lagoon settings with mountain scenery, without equating this broader perspective with the individual places in Sokcho.

The wider Seorak travel area also offers views of notable mountain destinations. Ulsanbawi Peak and the Manmulsang Rocks can be seen from the Seoraksan Cable Car. The cable car departs from Seoraksan National Park and takes about ten minutes to reach Gwongeumseong Fortress; the fortress offers panoramic views of Seoraksan. These details give a specific impression of the landscape experiences available in the wider travel area.
