Chuncheon offers very different perspectives on water, activity and city life: the Samaksan Lake Cable Car crosses Uiam Lake, the Gangchon Rail Park combines rail bikes and a train, and an alley lined with dakgalbi and makguksu restaurants is located on the central Chuncheon Myeongdong Street. For trip planning, you can consider these experiences as distinct themes: views and landscapes, technology and museums, gardens, and local cuisine.
Cable cars and skywalks: see Chuncheon from the water
The Chuncheon Samaksan Lake Cable Car connects Samcheondong with Samaksan across Uiam Lake. Its route is 3.61 kilometres long, and the installation is designed in the shape of an arch and a boomerang. In the crystal cabin, a transparent floor offers a clear view of Uiam Lake. At the viewpoint, a connecting walking path leads to a skywalk observation platform in about ten minutes.
The Soyanggang Skywalk offers another perspective. It is 174 metres long and extends over the river; a 156-metre section has a transparent reinforced-glass floor. At the end are a circular plaza and an observation platform. They are known for their panoramic views, particularly at sunset. Together, these offer two different views of the water: the cable car crossing the lake and the skywalk over the river.
Explore by rail bike and train
The Gangchon Rail Park combines a ride through the landscape with a connection to technology. The 8.5-kilometre course starts at Gimyujeong Station: six kilometres are covered by rail bike and 2.5 kilometres by train. Most of the route is downhill. Along the way, there are views of mountains, fields and a river, as well as tunnels with different themes and views of the Bukhangang River. The Rail Park also offers a VR rail bike service, which the city of Chuncheon describes as the first of its kind in South Korea. Museums and interactive experiences
The Animation Museum presents the history and production processes of animation, complemented by hands-on activities. The Toy Robot Hall brings together robots, toys and IT technology in an interactive exhibition that offers a playful introduction to the world of future robotics. Visitors can control robots and try out AR robots and metaverse experiences. The Animation Museum and Toy Robot Hall grounds also include an outdoor character park and a lawn with lake views.
The Chuncheon National Museum has a different focus: interactive exhibitions on the theme of “Children and Nature” combine play with movement, emotions and communication. If this programme is an important part of your plans, check with the museum before your visit.
Gardens and landscapes
Jade Garden makes use of the natural valley terrain to create a European-style garden, with its planting, architecture and building layout all reflecting this design theme. Across approximately 160,000 square metres, it features 24 themed areas, including a dry garden, a wedding garden, a moss garden and a rhododendron garden. Plants include rhododendrons, maple varieties, irises and blueberries. The named garden areas give the site a range of distinct features without reducing it to a single plant theme.
Jungdo is an island. The island formed naturally during the construction of the Uiam Dam; the surrounding landscape is considered beautiful. Chuncheon Mulle-gil is located in Songam Sports Town and is divided into three routes. The garden, island and route options each offer a distinct starting point for a trip that takes in other aspects of Chuncheon alongside its well-known glass and rail attractions.
Cultural sites and walking routes
The Gongjicheon Sculpture Park covers 26,928 square metres and features permanent works by well-known artists. Chuncheon Sairo 248 offers a different kind of public-space connection: the pedestrian-only suspension bridge links Gongjicheon-Uiam Park with the retention basin in Geunhwa-dong.
Dakgalbi and makguksu on Chuncheon Myeongdong Street
Chuncheon Myeongdong Street is a lively central shopping street. Chuncheon Myeongdong Dakgalbi Alley is located here, with rows of restaurants serving dakgalbi and makguksu. Individual restaurants’ offerings may change, so check each establishment’s latest information when making specific dining plans.
Dakgalbi is a regional dish associated with Chuncheon. Chicken is marinated in seasoned gochujang paste, then stir-fried with finely sliced cabbage and other vegetables in a hot, oiled pan. Together with makguksu, it is among the distinct local dishes featured in the alley. A visit to the central shopping street can therefore also be a chance to explore Chuncheon’s regional cuisine.
