Greyton brings together visible traces of its history, a Saturday market and several ways to enjoy the outdoors. Historic buildings and the Leiwater system stand out along the streets, while art, the market and cycling or walking routes offer other perspectives on the town. When planning your visit, two questions can help: Would you like to include the market in your Saturday, and would a stroll, a hike or cycling suit your stay best?

Historic Traces in Greyton

Greyton’s streets feature original cottages, Leiwater irrigation furrows and buildings dating from the 1850s and 1860s. Some of the oldest cottages were built between 1854 and 1860 in Vigne Lane and at the end of Vlei Street. A shepherd’s cottage dating from before 1840 is incorporated into the Old Potter’s Inn building on Main Road. Other surviving historic features include a Town Kraal and a Dipping Tank, a blacksmith’s house and forge, and the school’s boarding house.

The original Leiwater system consists of irrigation furrows along the streets. It has been preserved and is still used by residents. This brings historic buildings and infrastructure that remains in use side by side: one can be read in the buildings and their dates, the other in the furrows along the streets and how they are used.

The Market and the Town’s Artistic Life

A market for produce and crafts takes place on the village square every Saturday morning. The Greyton Village Market runs on Saturdays from 09:00 to 12:00; its stallholders sell their own products, which they grow, bake, brew or make by hand. Check the current market hours with the organiser before visiting, as the schedule may change. Greyton also has art studios and galleries. The market and art studios offer different cultural highlights: one focuses on home-grown produce and crafts, the other on artistic work.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Options

The public Commonage around Greyton is criss-crossed by hiking, walking and cycling routes. This offers a choice of trails for different kinds of outdoor activity. For cycling, there are also mountain-bike trails with flowing berms and fast descents, as well as numerous gravel routes of varying lengths and durations.

The descriptions offer different points to consider when planning: the mountain-bike trails are described in terms of their character, while the gravel routes are described by length and time commitment. When planning your day, you can start by considering what kind of ride interests you and how much time you have for it. Check the current access requirements for the mountain-bike trails with the operator before riding. You should also check the gravel routes’ details and availability with the route operator before your trip.
