In Overberg, coastal walks, fynbos and maritime history come together. One especially striking way to experience the landscape is the multi-day Whale Trail in De Hoop Nature Reserve. The trail leads through the protected area and offers the chance to spot southern right whales along the coast. In the wider destination of the Western Cape, whales migrate to the coast of De Hoop between June and November to calve and raise their young.

Hiking Trails, Mountain Biking and Kayaking

Kogelberg Nature Reserve also combines scenery with outdoor activity: a moderately difficult, 22-kilometre mountain biking route runs through Kogelberg Valley. It starts at the reserve’s administration office. White-water kayaking is permitted on the Palmiet River in the reserve every year. The two reserves therefore offer different activities—a multi-day coastal hike in De Hoop, and a mountain biking route and kayaking in Kogelberg Nature Reserve.

In the wider Overberg region, De Mond Nature Reserve offers two hiking trails, taking approximately two and four hours respectively. A longer option is the Damara Trail: this 16.5-kilometre overnight hiking trail runs from De Mond to Waenhuiskrans, also known as Arniston, over two days. The difference in duration is clear: De Mond has routes lasting a few hours, while the Damara Trail is designed as a two-day hike with an overnight stay.

Fynbos and the Southern Tip of Africa

Kogelberg Nature Reserve is known for the exceptional diversity and quality of its fynbos and is considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. The wider Overberg region is also home to Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, which is recognised and registered by UNESCO. More than 80 percent of this biosphere reserve consists of mountainous landscape.

In the wider destination of the Western Cape, Agulhas National Park at Cape Agulhas provides a different geographical point of reference. It encompasses the southern tip of the African continent, as well as the surrounding coastal plain and interior. Its best-known feature is the official meeting point of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is open daily from 09:00 to 16:00; the last climb is scheduled for 16:00. Weather-related closures are possible, so it is advisable to check opening hours before your visit.

Shipwrecks and Historic Houses

Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum focuses on maritime subjects and showcases shipwrecks along the dangerous coast of the southern Cape. It also explores their influence on the development of the Overberg District Municipality. At Caledon Museum, artefacts and displays from Caledon’s past complement the historical exhibitions dating from 1840 to 1900. The museum is housed in a Victorian home. The two museums thus offer different perspectives: one focuses on shipping and the coast, while the other explores the history of Caledon.

In the wider region, the restored Elim Heritage Centre tells the story of the village of Elim. The village has been declared a National Heritage Site. Stony Point in Betty’s Bay also brings together natural and cultural history: a boardwalk allows visitors to observe African penguins up close in their natural habitat. Remnants of the infrastructure of the former Waaygat Whaling Station remain at the site. A community restaurant next to Stony Point serves refreshments and meals during the day. Access is via Porter Road in Betty’s Bay, off the R44 (Clarence Drive).

When choosing your accommodation, your travel interests can help you decide: coastal walks and wildlife watching, fynbos and outdoor activities, or museums and local history. In Overberg and its wider region, the options described range from hikes lasting a few hours to multi-day trails—and from nature reserves to places where the maritime past remains visible.
