In Dr Kenneth Kaunda, the view ranges from geological history to museum spaces, art and gardens. These different fields of discovery offer several starting points for planning your trip: you can explore the landscape, history, or the collections and exhibitions in Potchefstroom.
Geology and Landscape
The Vredefort Dome is located in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District and is the oldest, largest and most deeply eroded complex meteorite impact structure in the world. Various evidence of this complex impact structure can be seen at accessible geological outcrops. The Dome is therefore not only a geological feature of global importance; the outcrops also bring the geological evidence found on site into focus.
Just outside Klerksdorp is Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, in the City of Matlosana. The protected area covers 1,200 hectares. Low koppies, scattered acacia trees, large grassland areas and three seasonal dams shape the landscape. The Orkney Likkewaan Hiking Trails are also part of the District’s natural heritage. Before setting out on a hike, check current access and trail conditions.
Museum and Art
The Klerksdorp Museum is housed in the Old Klerksdorp Prison, a late-Victorian sandstone building dating from 1891 in the City of Matlosana. The extensive permanent exhibition includes Khoisan rock art, originally from an initiation site for young girls. The House Museum adds to this perspective with five rooms depicting different historical periods. Authentic furniture and household items from each period are part of their furnishings.
In Potchefstroom, the NWU Gallery offers two gallery spaces and a large exhibition space for temporary exhibitions. Since opening, it has presented more than 100 exhibitions by local and international artists. It also houses artworks from the NWU Art Collection that are not currently on loan. As the exhibition programme may change, check the latest dates before visiting.
Garden and Tree Route in Potchefstroom
The NWU Botanical Garden adjoins the Potchefstroom Campus of North-West University and covers almost three hectares. The garden is predominantly home to indigenous plants. A few exotic plants have botanical, medicinal or educational significance. This gives the garden a composition that differs markedly from a collection focused mainly on exotic plants.
The Tree Route in the garden is about one kilometre long and gives visitors the opportunity to learn about more than 100 trees. Check current trail conditions before your walk.
Locations to Help Plan Your Trip
The N12 Treasure Route passes through Potchefstroom and the City of Matlosana, connecting Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein and Hartbeesfontein. The Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site is also near the route. The railway line from Gauteng to the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces also runs through Potchefstroom. While the road route connects several of the locations mentioned, the railway line places Potchefstroom within a wider regional route. Before travelling by train, check separately whether passenger services are available and which timetables apply.
The Matlosana Cultural Festival is part of the City of Matlosana’s annual events calendar. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the specific dates and programme; both may change. This allows you to combine the cultural focus of your trip with interests in the landscape and geology, without assuming a fixed route.
