The Vredefort Dome is the oldest, largest and most heavily eroded complex meteorite impact structure in the world. From this geological heritage to nature reserves, water experiences and regional cuisine, North West offers different perspectives on a trip. Which appeals to you most depends on whether you prefer exploring landscapes, going on game drives, or learning about geology and culture.

Traces of the impact

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Vredefort Dome lies partly within North West province. Its rural and natural landscapes illustrate the scale of the ring-shaped impact structures. Accessible geological outcrops reveal various features of the complex meteorite impact structure. An outcrop exposes rock and geological features; here, these sites bring the Dome’s distinctive shape vividly into view. The landscape and geological heritage are therefore closely linked: visitors interested in the formation and nature of this structure can examine concrete evidence at the outcrops while also taking in the broader landscape context.

Game drives and bushland

Madikwe Game Reserve encompasses 75,000 hectares of malaria-free African bushland. It is located in North West province, west of the Marico River. Guided game drives and bush walks are reserved exclusively for guests of the safari lodges. If these activities are a deciding factor for your trip, this lodge-based participation requirement is relevant when choosing accommodation.

At Pilanesberg National Park, scheduled game drives are offered daily in the early morning and afternoon. These two times of day provide an initial guide for planning; departure times may change, so check them in advance. There is a practical difference between the two reserves: in Madikwe, participation in game drives and bush walks is tied to staying at a safari lodge, while Pilanesberg offers a guide for planning with scheduled drives at two times of day.

Woodland, river and trails

Borakalalo Nature Reserve encompasses 13,000 hectares of woodland and open bushland. It is located on the Moretele River and the 800-hectare Klipvoor Dam. Visitors can walk along designated trails and experience the park’s ecological diversity. Borakalalo therefore offers a way to experience the landscape on foot. As trail access may change, it is advisable to check current accessibility before setting out.

Water experiences, routes and golf

The Taung Heritage Route stretches for more than 45 kilometres and includes a limestone waterfall and the Blue Pools. Its length and two named landscape features give the route a distinctive sense of discovery. At the Roaring Lagoon in the Valley of Waves, two-metre-high waves rise every 90 seconds. If this experience is on your wish list, check the latest visitor information in advance, as access and facilities may change.

Golf is another possible interest: Gary Player Country Club is one of two golf courses at Sun City Resort in North West. Operating and booking conditions may change; check the current conditions before planning a game.

Traditional cuisine

The Lesedi African Lodge and Cultural Village offers a culinary perspective: the Nyama Choma Restaurant serves a buffet featuring traditional cuisine. Menus and programmes may change. Alongside the landscape and geological highlights, this offering adds another perspective to the range of experiences. You can choose what to explore in North West based on the topics that interest you most, without reducing the different experiences to a single way of travelling.
