A natural spring, rock paintings and routes connecting several places: Kgalagadi offers a range of starting points for a trip that takes in nature and history. The municipal plan for 2025/26 described the Eye of Kuruman as unsafe for visitors due to neglect; check the latest safety and access information before visiting.

Water and history in Kuruman

The Eye of Kuruman is a natural spring that supplies around 20 to 30 million litres of crystal-clear water every day. It feeds Kuruman’s domestic water supply, as well as the Kuruman River and two irrigation canals, each 7 kilometres long. According to available information, the Eye of Kuruman is considered the largest natural spring in the Southern Hemisphere.

The spring also shaped the history of the town: in the early 19th century, it led to the establishment of a mission station. This is why it was called the “Fountain of Christianity”. At the Eye of Kuruman, a natural water source and the history of an early mission station come together.

Cultural heritage and landscape

Wonderwerk Cave is a national heritage site and is among the world’s longest-inhabited caves. San rock paintings are located near the entrance. The site’s cultural significance lies both in its long history of habitation and in the paintings found in the immediate vicinity of this landmark.

At the Kalahari Raptor Centre, injured birds are cared for and can be observed up close. Check current operating conditions before visiting. This makes birdwatching a distinct focus when planning your trip, separate from cave and landscape themes.

The Camelthorn Forest is also a notable landscape feature: the forest of Acacia erioloba is described as one of only two forests of its kind in the world. This makes it a distinct nature-focused attraction alongside the spring and cultural heritage sites.

Routes and activities

The Kalahari Raptor Trail connects Kuruman, Kathu, Olifantshoek, Upington, Keimoes, Kakamas and Augrabies Falls National Park. Kuruman is also on the Namaquari Route. This forms part of the main connection between Gauteng and Namibia, as well as the connection between Cape Town and Namibia via Upington. The two route references answer different navigation questions: the trail connects the places listed, while the Namaquari Route forms part of larger connections. Road conditions and route services can change; check the latest information before travelling.

Khai Apple Recreation Resort in the Gamagara municipality offers camping and caravan facilities, fishing and horse riding. Check operating arrangements and public access before visiting. The site adds an offering that combines accommodation facilities and activities to the nature and cultural heritage sites; this does not imply that other types of accommodation are available.

When choosing what to focus on, you can weigh up water and local history, cultural heritage, birdwatching, landscape and route planning. Information about each place can help you distinguish between these themes and plan your trip according to your interests.
