The Vaal River flows through the Frances Baard District Municipality. In Barkly West, the history of diamonds is still visible today: seven licensed prospectors continue to sift the river’s sand and gravel for diamonds. This activity is accessible only as part of guided tours; check in advance whether a tour is available for your visit. Exhibitions, museums and historic sites also tell different stories of diamond mining.

Diamond history and archaeological traces

The Big Hole Visitor Centre tells the many-layered story of diamond mining: from the people who searched for diamonds and the tools they used to the prosperity they generated. As well as the finds themselves, the focus is on people and their work. The Big Hole South Africa site is wheelchair accessible.

Barkly West also brings together several historical perspectives. The museum there is housed in a customs house restored in 2000; its exhibitions cover local geology, archaeology and history. St Mary’s Anglican Church in Barkly West was built in 1871 and was the first church on the diamond fields. Together, the church and museum lead from the history of mining to other traces of the town and its surroundings.

Near Barkly West, an open-air exhibition at Canteen Kopje explains the significance of early hand-axe industries dating back more than a million years. Here, the archaeological perspective reaches far beyond the history of diamond mining. Also in the destination’s wider surroundings is the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre. It is owned by the !Xun and Khwe communities and is an important source of income and employment for them.

Kimberley: memorials and walks

In Kimberley, the Honoured Dead Memorial commemorates those who died defending the city during the siege. Sir Herbert Baker designed the memorial; it was commissioned by C. J. Rhodes. The McGregor Museum adds another historical perspective, with natural history, the Siege of Kimberley and a religion hall. Its Ancestors Gallery traces three million years of human history in the Northern Cape.

There are two named routes for exploring Kimberley’s historic sites on foot. The Belgravia Historical Walk takes you to 33 of the city’s most historically significant sites; the Great Kimberley North Walk leads to 42 other places of interest. These numbers offer a concrete comparison of the sites on each route. If you plan to take one of the walks, check local maps and access arrangements.

Hartswater and the Vaalharts Valley

Hartswater was established in 1934 as a town for the northern section of the Vaalharts irrigation system. The Women’s Memorial in Hartswater offers a different perspective: the small brick church has stained-glass windows and a sculpted relief honouring the role of women in society.

Another feature is the Hartswater Wine Cellar, which offers wine tastings and local wines under the labels Overvaal and Elements. If you plan to include this in your itinerary, check its availability before travelling. In the Vaalharts Valley, the Frances Baard District also offers agritourism experiences; check individual offerings before your trip as well.

The district’s character also includes a range of named attractions, among them Gong-Gong Waterfall. Together with the historic sites, archaeological themes and experiences in the Vaalharts Valley, Frances Baard offers different ways to explore the region. You can choose the focus that interests you most through specific discoveries—from diamond history and city walks to archaeology and wine.
