If you would like to get to know Trebnje through its culture, several distinct themes offer a glimpse into the town’s history: naïve art, religious art and historic buildings. The gallery has its own collection focus; the parish church and Trebanjski grad tell other chapters of the history of art and architecture. There are also places that commemorate people who shaped the life of the town. This lets you tailor your stay to the theme that interests you most.

Art and cultural heritage

The Galerija likovnih samorastnikov Trebnje has been Slovenia’s central institution for naïve art since 1971. Its collection comprises around 1,500 works of art by more than 300 artists. A permanent exhibition, changing exhibitions and various events are part of its programme. The gallery is therefore a clear focal point for a cultural visit: naïve art takes centre stage here, and the different exhibition formats offer more than one way to engage with the subject.

The parish Church of the Assumption of Mary also brings architecture and art together. It stands in the centre of Trebnje; the present-day three-nave building was constructed in 1443 in the Late Gothic style. The main altar was made by the woodcarver Janežič and features a painting of the Assumption of Mary by Matevž Langus. Langus also created the Stations of the Cross. The presbytery contains frescoes by Koželj. This building thus brings together Late Gothic architecture and several named works of religious art.

Architectural history and remembrance

Trebanjski grad, also known as Treffen, stands on a rise below Bukovje on the right bank of the Temenica River. The building dates back to around the year 1000. Other historic features of the complex have also been identified: a square tower has Roman foundations, while a round tower has a secret escape route dating from the time of the Ottoman incursions. The left and right wings date from the early 16th century. These details distinguish the approximate early construction date from the later building sections and provide several points of reference for its architectural history.

Two different institutions offer further insights into Trebnje’s cultural memory. The permanent exhibition Rastoča knjiga is housed at the Centru za izobraževanje in kulturo Trebnje. It is dedicated to people who have had a major influence on the life of the town. In 1983, a memorial room for Pavel Golia, the poet and playwright, was set up at the Knjižnica Pavla Golie Trebnje. While Rastoča knjiga looks at several influential figures, the memorial room commemorates one person and their literary work.

Orientation and other interests

The 15th meridian is a notable landmark: it passes through Trebnje and is marked by a plaque and a radio-controlled clock at the western entrance to the town. The clock shows the exact time in Central Europe. Those looking for a circular route rather than art and architectural history will find another option in the Baragova pohodna pot. The 18-kilometre circular route starts in front of the parish Church of the Assumption of Mary; most of it leads through woodland or meadows. A specific starting point and a clearly measured circular route thus offer an alternative to a cultural exploration.

The event Iz trebanjskega koša puts local specialities, creative activities and a varied programme for all generations in the spotlight. It complements the themes of art and architectural history with a culinary and programme-related dimension, without requiring a specific event date.
