Šmarje pri Jelšah offers several ways to explore cultural history: Baroque art, sacred architecture, pilgrimage and the history of Jelšingrad. When planning your stay, you can give these themes different weight according to your interests. A particularly clearly dated occasion is the traditional pilgrimage gathering in August; the works of art and architecture offer further perspectives of their own.

Baroque Collection and Kalvarija

The Muzej baroka preserves and displays 43 original wooden sculptures from the chapels of Šmarje-Kalvarija. The collection also includes other Baroque furnishings from the chapels and the Church of sv. Roka. The museum also uses multimedia technology to present other Baroque monuments from Obsotelje and Kozjansko. Local works of art are thus presented alongside a glimpse of two other regions.

Kalvarija is a stone path that zigzags up the northern slope to the Church of sv. Roka. In some places, the path has steps; 14 chapels line the route. The fourteenth chapel contains the Holy Stairs and a Holy Sepulchre. Its stairway has 30 steps. These details give the route a clear sequence: the chapels line Kalvarija, while the Holy Stairs and the Holy Sepulchre are found together in the final chapel.

Church Art and Architectural History

The Church of sv. Roka is one of Slovenia’s outstanding art monuments. Its architectural style is dated to the 17th century; the listed structural elements include the presbytery, a somewhat wider nave and the bell tower. The frescoes in the presbytery mainly depict scenes from the legend of Saint Roch, as well as apostles and Church Fathers. The architecture and wall paintings offer different starting points for exploring the church.

The parish church of Šmarje pri Jelšah is a separate point of interest: it is considered the oldest building in the town and was first mentioned in writing in 1236. The bell tower contains 400-year-old frescoes, discovered during restoration work from 2017 to 2022. In 1878, the parish church was extended and a northern and a southern chapel were added. The dates mark different stages: the early written mention was followed by the 19th-century extension and the discovery of the frescoes during more recent restoration work.

Jelšingrad Through the Ages

Jelšingrad was redesigned in the Oriental style in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, after which it was considered one of the most beautiful castle buildings in Štajerska. The park is also part of the traditional description of the estate: Jelšingrad was surrounded by a park, and allegorical figures representing the four seasons stood at the edge of the courtyard. The redesign and the garden figures point to different aspects of the former castle estate. One of the newly developed tourist experiences around Jelšingrad is also a virtual reality presentation about the castle’s history.

Pilgrimage and Planning Your Visit

A traditional pilgrimage gathering takes place every year on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, the parish’s patron saint, and on 16 August, the feast day of Saint Roch. More than 1,000 people attend. If this occasion is a deciding factor for your trip, include both dates in your plans and check the information for the relevant year.

The TIC Šmarje pri Jelšah is located in the town centre, very close to the cultural centre. It can arrange visits accompanied by local tourism guides. If you are considering a guided tour, check in advance whether one is available on your preferred date.

When choosing accommodation, consider which focus you want to shape your stay: the sculptures and chapels of Kalvarija, the art in the churches, or the architectural and castle history. The annual pilgrimage days provide a separate point of reference in time.
