In Kozje, cultural history can be read through specific dates, while the range of attractions extends from museum collections to nature watching. The castle’s history runs from its first mention in 1286 to a depiction as a ruin in 1681. Churches, an exhibition in the former district court prison, a historic classroom and nearby nature themes give the area a variety of points of interest.

Kozje Castle at Two Moments in History

Kozje Castle is one of the oldest castles in Slovenian Styria. It is first mentioned in 1286 as castrum Trachenberk. An engraving by Vischer from 1681 already shows it as a ruin. The two dates mark different chapters: one indicates its first mention, while the other refers to a later depiction in a ruined state. If you want to put the area’s history in context, you can distinguish between these dates rather than reading them as equivalent references.

Churches with Different Dates

The churches also tell different aspects of the area’s history. The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary is mentioned as early as 1249 and preserves a stone heraldic tombstone of Christoph pl. Drachenburg from 1516. The Church of St. Ema is a late Gothic building dating from 1466 and is part of the Emina pot trail. The dates therefore refer to different things: 1249 is the early mention of the parish church, 1466 is the construction year of the Church of St. Ema, and 1516 is the date of the tombstone. This keeps each historical reference clear.

Exhibition in the Former Prison

The “Sodstvo v Kozjem” exhibition presents the rooms of the former prison of the Kozje District Court. The District Court was in operation from 1932. Visits to the exhibition are possible by prior arrangement; confirm the arrangements before your visit. The court theme thus consists of two specific elements: the rooms of the former prison and the history of the District Court.

A Classroom and a Museum Mill

The Muzejska učilnica “Šola moje mame” in Kozje shows a classroom from the time of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The exhibits include original school doors from the former school and a complete classroom with wooden benches and a blackboard. The doors and furnished room make the exhibition more than a collection of individual school objects: a whole classroom is at its heart. As visiting arrangements may change, check in advance for current visiting options.

The Kroflnov Mill in Kozje is also among the museum collections set up for visitors to view. If you plan to visit, check the viewing arrangements in advance. The “Sodstvo v Kozjem” exhibition, the classroom and the mill offer different points of focus: court history, school life and a mill collection can be considered as separate themes for your stay.

Nature in the Valley and Along the Trail

Bister Graben, a narrow valley, lies just outside the market town of Kozje. Visitors interested in wildlife and plant life can observe numerous natural features there. Plants and animals are also among the themes of the circular trail to Kozje Castle, also called Drachenburg. Nature can therefore be encountered both in the valley and along the castle loop trail. Another walking option leads from Kozje to Vetrnik: Vetrnik can be reached on foot in 1.5 hours. Actual walking time may vary depending on the route and conditions.

The options differ considerably when it comes to choosing a focus: the castle and churches provide historical points of reference, the museum themes range from the court to the classroom and the mill, and Bister Graben and the castle loop trail feature nature. Vetrnik adds a specific but variable walking time to the selection. You can therefore consider whether you would like to focus mainly on historical topics, museum collections or nature watching during your stay.
