When planning a trip to Zgornja Ložnica, you can explore culture, outdoor trails, and local food as different areas of interest. The church dedicated to St. Wenceslas combines a long history with a clearly describable architectural form and furnishings. There are also hiking trails along the Ložnica stream, performances of local customs, and a dish called “Ložniška.” You can tailor your stay to your interests: architectural history, outdoor activities, tradition, or regional cuisine.
Hiking along the Ložnica Stream
A trail runs alongside the Ložnica stream. The interactive hiking trail “Z zvezdo na čelu in potok pod nogami” leads from the branch school of OŠ Zgornja Ložnica to Jakčev mlin and back.
The Zgornja Ložnica Tourist Association also established the Stepišnikova Trail. The Stepišnikova Trail aims to revive local cultural heritage and promote sustainable tourism through cultural heritage. The trail to Jakčev mlin returns to its starting point; the Stepišnikova Trail aims to revive local cultural heritage and promote sustainable tourism through cultural heritage. Check whether the trails are currently accessible before setting out on a specific hike.
The Church of St. Wenceslas
The Church of St. Wenceslas is the only church in Slovenia dedicated to this saint; it was first mentioned in 1251. Its structure comprises a nave, a single-bay presbytery with a polygonal end, chapels, and a bell tower on the north wall. “Single-bay” refers to a single structural section; the polygonal end describes the presbytery’s multi-sided shape. The nave, presbytery, chapels, and tower can thus be viewed as distinct parts of the church building.
The furnishings also offer a distinctive perspective on the building’s history: the main altar, the north altar, and the pulpit were made by Jožef Holzinger. The floor plan draws attention to the spatial layout, while the three works by Holzinger provide specific examples of the church’s artistic furnishings.
Other Traces of Local Culture
One local cultural trace is a Celtic gravestone built into the western part of a church in Zgornja Ložnica. Integrated into the masonry, the stone offers a different perspective on local cultural heritage than the building’s architectural form and altar furnishings.
The performances by the Ložniške ufarce preserve and bring to life folk customs, traditions, and farming activities such as sheep shearing and harvesting. Original objects and folk songs illustrate these subjects, and the local dialect is also used. As a result, the focus is not only on individual objects, but also on ways of working, language, and inherited customs. This offers a different way to explore local culture than looking at church architecture.
Ethnological Evenings
Ethnological evenings for members have been held in the multipurpose hall in Zgornja Ložnica for more than 14 years. If you would like to plan your visit around one of these evenings, it is best to check the dates and participation requirements in advance.
A Dish Called “Ložniška”
