Kebelj lies on a gently sloping hillside in the southeastern part of the Pohorje Mountains. Cultural monuments along the nature trail, the parish church of St. Marjeta and the ruins of ZajÄŤev grad give the place historical points of reference. The Pohorje forests around the trail provide a habitat for numerous organisms. If you would like to explore nature and local history together, there are several themes to choose from: landscape, past use, religious art and surviving architectural features.
Landscape and Past Use
The Čadramski potok rises above Kebelj; in the past, it powered numerous mills and sawmills. The stream is therefore part of both the landscape and the history of water use. The Pohorje forests around the trail have a different connection to nature: they provide a habitat for numerous organisms. The stream and forest show two distinct relationships with the area—water as a former source of power and forest as a habitat. This contrast brings together the natural environment and local history without equating the two.
The Trail and Its Destinations
The Kebelj nature trail passes numerous cultural monuments that bear witness to the early settlement and way of life of Kebelj’s inhabitants. It also leads to Klemenclov mlin. In this way, the route links cultural monuments with a specific named destination, rather than covering only general nature topics. A guided tour can be arranged for larger groups; coordinate it locally before making plans.
Parish Church of St. Marjeta
The frescoes in the parish church of St. Marjeta date from 1750. Roman stones remained visible after the exterior renovation in 2003. The dates refer to different details: 1750 dates the frescoes, while 2003 dates the renovation, after which the stones remained visible. This lets you view painted and Roman traces side by side in one building. The church can be visited by prior arrangement; coordinate your visit accordingly.
To the Ruins of ZajÄŤev grad
A marked trail leads to the ruins of Zajčev grad. After a short walk along a forest path, you will reach the ruins; check local trail conditions before setting out. A Romanesque tower is still visible there. Zajčev grad is protected as an immovable monument of local importance. The tower and monument status provide two different points of reference: the tower is a specific visible architectural feature, while the designation describes the site’s protection status. This makes the short walk a chance to see a clearly identifiable historical trace.
Finding Your Way on the Trails
A noticeboard in the northeastern part of the village, on the road to Nadgrad, serves as a point of reference for trails in the area around Kebelj. With the exception of the Kebeljska transverzala, the trails start there. This information applies to trails in the surrounding area generally, not just the nature trail. Bear the Kebeljska transverzala in mind as an exception when choosing a starting point.
