A circular hike of around 40 kilometres begins and ends in Sodražica: the “Sodraška pešpot” connects the town with its surroundings. The area also features a karst plateau, the Kadice Gorge, and routes that focus on craftsmanship and local history. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering different themes and ways of getting around, rather than treating all the options as a single route.

Karst landscape around Kadice and Travna gora

The Kadice Gorge shows how water has shaped the landscape. Its features include water-sculpted pools, a short canyon, and a natural waterfall. Protected plant life is also part of this natural area. Near Kadice and on Travna gora, the municipality of Sodražica is home to the southernmost range of the Carniolan primrose (Primula carniolica). This Slovenian endemic has survived since the Ice Age.

Travna gora is part of the Velika gora mountain range. It is a high karst plateau and, at around 900 to 1,200 metres, the highest part of the municipality of Sodražica. Two distinct landscape features can therefore be found side by side: the water-sculpted features of the Kadice Gorge and the high karst plateau of Travna gora.

Hiking and cycling on different routes

The “Sodraška pešpot” is marked as a circular hiking route with mountain trail signs and additional markers bearing the abbreviation “SP”. It can be linked with sections of the “Ribniška pot”, “Potoška pot”, “Kočevska pot”, “Rimsko pot”, and “Slovensko pot raziskav”. Check the markings on site before setting out. Another circular hike, “Mimo Kadic na Travno goro”, begins in Sodražica. “Pogled na Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe” also starts there and leads towards Dom na Travni gori; visibility depends on the weather and vegetation.

On two wheels, the circular route “Preko Slemen in Travne gore” crosses two plateaus before returning to Sodražica. The cycling route “Po domovini rjavega medveda” is approximately 40 kilometres long and also begins and ends in town; it is intended for experienced cyclists. The two circular routes of around 40 kilometres can therefore be distinguished mainly by how you travel: one is a hike, the other a cycling route. The distances are approximate guide values and do not indicate how long either route takes.

Craftsmanship, history, and cultural attractions

The Sodražica area is considered the birthplace of “suha roba”, a traditional local woodcraft that is particularly widespread here. A 21-kilometre route runs through Sodražica. The route “Po rokodelskih krajih čudežev in legend” leads to visitor attractions in Sodražica, including a sieve-maker’s workshop and the Psoglavac statue.

The parish church of Saint Mary Magdalene was built in 1745 on the site of an earlier chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, which had a cemetery. Its main marble altar dates from 1928 and was made to the designs of architect Ivan Vurnik. Next to the church is a memorial park dedicated to prominent Slovenians who came from Sodražica or worked there. In Ravni Dol, the Maticova etno hiša museum presents the life of a family from the suha roba craft tradition, as well as rural household life in the previous century.
