Ribnica brings together centuries-old woodworking and pottery traditions with art, castle and church history, and outdoor activities. When planning a trip, you can choose between demonstrations and exhibitions, cultural attractions, and time on cycling or hiking trails to suit your interests.
Crafts, from demonstrations to hands-on work
Ribnica is known for its centuries-old tradition of making wooden and pottery goods. At the Rokodelski Center Ribnica, visitors can watch demonstrations of how these traditional goods are made. The center also features an exhibition on contemporary wooden and pottery production, as well as other local crafts. Here, traditional crafts meet today’s craft production.
If you would like to do more than watch, you can take part in a craft workshop by prior arrangement. With guidance from an experienced craftsperson, you will make your own handcrafted item. Arranging this in advance is therefore part of planning this activity.
The Rokodelski Center features the permanent exhibitions “Suha roba in lončarstvo,” “Ribnica, veličina majhnosti,” and “Boj krvavi zoper čarovniško zalego.” The permanent exhibition “Suhorobarstvo & Lončarstvo” received the 2022 Valvasor Award for outstanding achievements in museology. One of Slovenia’s best-known fairs is also dedicated to the tradition of wooden and pottery goods. Dates and programmes vary; if you would like to include the fair in your trip, check the dates for your stay.
Castle, church and art
At Ribnica Castle, two restored towers are connected by a new passageway. The Ribnica Museum has been housed in the castle’s restored rooms since 1961. The Park kulturnikov at the castle was established in 1982 with memorial markers honouring 65 distinguished people from Ribnica. The open-air theatre is also part of the castle grounds and continues to serve as a venue for outdoor events.
The Church of Sv. Štefan is another point of interest for art and architecture enthusiasts. Its original mechanical organs, made by Franc Goršič, date from 1874 and are among the largest mechanical organs in Slovenia. The main altar is the work of Ivan Grohar. The church thus showcases both a significant instrument and a work by the Slovenian painter.
The Miklova hiša Gallery mainly presents contemporary Slovenian visual art and houses two of its own art collections. If you would like to see a particular exhibition, it is worth checking the current programme, as individual exhibitions may change.
Exploring by bike or on foot
Visitors can rent bicycles and use a collection of cycling routes through the Ribnica Valley. Ribnica also offers the Ricikel bike-sharing system, with eight conventional bicycles available to all users in the municipality around the clock. As rental services and route conditions may change, check the details before setting out.
There are also various hiking options: the Ribnica Mountain Trail is well marked. Many other trails in Ribnica and the surrounding area lead to viewpoints, natural attractions and medieval castles. Check trail conditions and markings before setting out.
Planning your stay
When looking for hotels in Ribnica, use your planned activities as a guide: a culture-focused stay calls for different priorities than a trip that also includes cycling and hiking trails.
