Gorišnica offers several different reasons to explore the area: a more than 300-year-old Pannonian-style house, a parish church with medieval origins, a sculpture made of cast-iron crosses and a nature interpretation point. Športni Park Gorišnica also has a focus of its own, with its sports facilities. When choosing a destination, you can therefore take cultural heritage, landscape, nature interpretation and sport into account.

Landscape and location

Gorišnica lies on both sides of the Formin hydroelectric power plant canal and within the floodplain of the Pesnica River. The fertile plain around the settlement is characterised by farmland and meadows, with smaller patches of woodland between settlements. The canal and river basin, as well as the agricultural plain, shape the surrounding landscape. These features offer a different perspective on the area from its historic buildings.

Houses and ecclesiastical heritage

Dominkova domačija is an L-shaped wooden house with clay plaster and a thatched roof. Its original rooms and furnishings have been preserved. The more than 300-year-old house is considered the oldest fully preserved Pannonian-style house. Its design and preserved furnishings make it a tangible example of rural architecture and everyday life in the past. Visits are possible daily by prior arrangement by telephone. Confirm your visit before travelling, as arrangements may change.

Sokova domačija is not yet set up for regular individual visits. The parish church of Saint Margaret of Antioch stands in the centre of Gorišnica and is considered one of the municipality’s most important cultural, historical and spiritual sights. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages. The feast of Saint Margaret is a special occasion: celebrated on 20 July, it continues to bring together worshippers and visitors and preserves the tradition of the parish feast. If you would like to plan your trip around the feast, check the specific dates and arrangements.

Memorial sculpture and nature interpretation

The sculpture featuring a collection of cast-iron crosses is made up of 382 crosses. They are arranged around a circular path leading to a central composition. The work is Franc Tobias’s first comparable work and remains the only one that, in addition to its artistic value, also serves as a communal anonymous urn grave. The artwork and its function as a grave are combined here, giving the sculpture its distinctive character.

The DRAVA-NATURA-2000 Gorišnica interpretation point is one of the nature interpretation units along the Drava River and the Drava Cycle Route. It focuses on the importance of native plant species and the problems caused by plantations of non-native trees. Visits to the interpretation units are free of charge. While the houses and church focus on architectural and local history, this point explores plant species and the consequences of non-native tree plantations.

Sport and planning your stay

Športni Park Gorišnica is a place for sport, recreation, social activities, training, competitions and events. Its facilities include a grass football pitch, an athletics track, a secondary pitch, an outdoor fitness area, a children’s playground and a basketball court. There is a large paved car park for visitors, making access easier. Preparatory matches and various local sporting events are regularly held in the park; individual dates may vary. Check event dates before your visit if you would like to include a match or event in your plans. When looking for a holiday apartment, these different features can help you assess Gorišnica as a destination: cultural heritage and landscape sit alongside nature interpretation and sports facilities.
