Two of the three thermal springs at Terme Dolenjske Toplice lie directly beneath the indoor pools Knežja and Jama at Hotel Vital. Thermal bathing is therefore a defining feature of the town; archaeological trails, church architecture and nature offer further perspectives for a stay.
Thermal Pools and Water Attractions
The Laguna area at Vitarium Spa & Beauty comprises three indoor and outdoor pools with areas of 324, 304 and 850 square metres. Balnea FUN offers four outdoor waterslides, a pool with a pirate ship and a paddling pool; there is also a climbing wall in the indoor pool. Archaeology and Architectural History
The 2.5-kilometre Cvinger Archaeological Trail is marked with information panels and has an elevation difference of 60 metres. It passes a burial mound field, a former smelting site, a cave and the ruins of a fortification. The Cvinger area is considered one of the most important centres of the Early Iron Age in Slovenia and the wider southeastern Alpine region. Its length, elevation difference and stops provide a concrete framework for understanding the archaeological traces along the trail.
St Anne’s Church also brings together different building periods: its foundations preserve remains of a medieval predecessor church from the end of the 15th century, including Gothic windows and a Gothic portal in the choir. On the south side are a tower with loopholes and part of the medieval defensive wall. The ruins of Rožek (Roseckh) Castle tell of another historical period: it was built at the beginning of the 13th century, first mentioned in 1249 and abandoned in the 19th century.
Stream, Trails and Outdoor Activities
The Sušica stream flows through the centre of Dolenjske Toplice. Because of its hydrogeological and geomorphological features, it is designated as a natural asset; because it is home to the olm and the bullhead, it is part of the European Natura 2000 ecological network. This brings a visible waterway and a designated nature conservation area together in the heart of the town.
The municipality has 18 marked hiking trails and six marked cycling trails. All trails start in front of the large map on the façade of the Dolenjske Toplice Cultural and Congress Centre. The route selection may be updated, so check the latest overview before setting out. Another way to experience nature is along the trail to Sedlata gorica on Pogorelec: it follows forest paths and offers encounters with local flora and fauna.
Paragliders can use the Peter take-off site on Straški hrib, above Dolenje Polje, at an altitude of 464 metres. A second take-off site is on Sedlata gorica on Pogorelec. Flying conditions and local procedures may change; check the current options in advance.
Experience Trail and Regional Culture
The Dotkova skrivnost experience trail starts at Sitarjeva hiša, next to the Dolenjske Toplice Tourist Information Centre (TIC). Solve the 13 tasks to get the key to the chest. The trail is designed for children aged three to around ten. Its format may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before your visit.
Sitarjeva hiša is located among several cold karst springs. A nearby spring once served as the main source of water for the residents of Dolenjske Toplice. The history of the house is also layered: during the owner’s lifetime, the ground floor was converted into an inn; guest rooms were on the upper floor, and later the inn became a restaurant.
In the area around Dolenjske Toplice, the Muzej Kočevarjev staroselcev offers guided visits by prior arrangement. The museum focuses on the former residents of the Kočevje area, who lived there for more than 600 years, and on the German-speaking language enclave covering 800 square kilometres: its settlement in the 14th century, life and work, and migration during the Second World War.
