Explore Šmarjeta through several specific interests: sacred art, regional wines, and routes for walking or cycling. Visitors can see a 17th-century crucifixion painting in St. Margaret’s Church; at the “Izvir cvička” wine fountain, wines from the surrounding vineyards take center stage. There is also a 6 km circular trail and a cycling route suitable for less experienced cyclists and families. This gives you a practical choice between culture, wine and outdoor activity, without having to follow a set order.

Church and art history

St. Margaret’s Church was built between 1909 and 1928. Visitors can see a 17th-century crucifixion painting there. Two clearly different periods thus come together on a visit: the construction of the church and a work of art several centuries older. If you are interested in both, you can place the church in the context of its construction period and also appreciate the older painting as a historical reference in its own right.

Wine and a biographical connection

At the “Izvir cvička” wine fountain, four of the five automated taps are used for wine tasting, with wines from the surrounding vineyards on offer. Selected Slovenian wines are served at Dvorec Gregorčič. These offer two distinct ways to explore wine: tasting at a fountain with a regional wine selection, and a selection of Slovenian wines at Dvorec. The Dvorec is also the birthplace of Slovenian ornamental artist Jože Karlovšek. This biographical connection gives the place a distinct cultural and historical significance beyond its wine.

Finding your way at Moletova hiša

A tourist information office is located at Moletova hiša. It provides information about the Šmarješke Toplice destination and helps visitors find their way. Moletova hiša also has a small shop selling local products and souvenirs. This means practical information and local products are available at the same address. Check the information office’s opening arrangements before your trip; the shop’s selection may change.

On foot or by bike

The Šmarjeta hiking route is a 6 km circular trail. Its length and circular layout give you two concrete details to help you choose: you can estimate the extent of the hike and know that the route forms a loop. Route details may be updated, so check them before setting out. For cycling, the “Ob vznožju Gorjancev” route offers a different kind of activity: it is suitable for all cyclists, explicitly including less experienced cyclists and families. Conditions on this route may change. If distance is the deciding factor, the hiking trail gives you a specific measure; if you are looking for a route described as suitable for different experience levels, the cycling route can help guide your choice.
