Roman burial mounds and the installations of the Rupnik Line offer two different historical perspectives in Gočova. A route over Gočovski vrh adds an active focus to travel planning; at Gočovski Dvorec, weekend tasting menus are part of the culinary offering.
Roman Burial Mounds and Cultural Landscape
Podgradnom is the largest burial ground in the settlement center of Gočova and an important consecrated site in the Roman cultural landscape. Two burial mounds were archaeologically investigated at Gočovski vrh; stone cist graves and Roman pottery were found there. The burial ground and the finds from Gočovski vrh thus represent different aspects of Gočova’s Roman heritage.
Gočova – Gomila I is a single, unidentified and partially excavated burial mound on the eastern edge of the forest along the Nadbišec–Gočova road. It is 15 meters in diameter and 1.1 meters high. The single, likewise unidentified and partially excavated burial mound Gočova – Rimska gomila ob cesti Gočova–Nadbišec lies on the western edge of the forest along the Nadbišec–Gočova road. It measures 13 meters in diameter and 0.8 meters in height. Both are important visual landmarks in the Roman cultural landscape because of their prominent location on the Gočova plateau. Gočova – Gomila I is larger in both dimensions.
The Fortifications of the Rupnik Line
The Rupnik Line belongs to a different historical period. Before the Second World War, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia began building the fortification system along its borders; it was intended to protect against Italian attacks. Several well-preserved structures from the line stand in the forest beside the Gočova–Voličina road.
The fortifications in Gočova include an anti-tank position for a gun. A trench connects it to a machine-gun position; from there, a supply trench leads into the hinterland. The trenches connect the positions to one another and carry supplies farther into the hinterland. This distinguishes the Rupnik Line from the Roman burial sites: here, the focus is on defensive structures and their connections, while the Roman sites focus on graves and their significance in the Roman cultural landscape.
Hiking Route over Gočovski vrh
The Zavrh–Sveta Trojica–Negova route passes over Gočovski vrh to the fire station in Gočova, where it connects to the Ptuj–Lenart regional road. Thus, both a route over Gočovski vrh and a named destination and road connection in Gočova are part of the route. For travel planning, it offers a different focus from the individual historical sites: it provides a described route, while the burial mounds and fortifications each represent distinct historical themes.
