At the bottom of a U-shaped glacial valley, Zgornje Jezersko is dotted with erratic boulders and distinctive moraines. Historic farmsteads, churches and trails add to the landscape.
Glacial Traces and Walks
The heart-shaped lake Planšar (Planšarsko jezero) was created in memory of a former glacial lake that gave Jezersko its name. A short walk follows the Jezernica stream from the center to the lake. It is also accessible to visitors with reduced mobility; the signposted road leads towards the border crossing. Check local conditions before setting out. Another accessible highlight is Jezerska slatina: the mineral water spring has a public drinking fountain on the main road, which is also accessible to visitors with reduced mobility.
In the Ravenska Kočna valley, a particularly scenic walk follows a nature trail. Those looking for a longer winter activity will find 17 kilometers of carefully groomed cross-country ski trails there, for all age groups and ability levels. Grooming and access depend on snow conditions. The choice between a short walk and a ski trail is therefore not just a matter of duration, but also of season.
Waterfalls and Mountain Trails
Ankova slapova consists of two waterfalls at an altitude of 1,240 meters: the upper one is seven meters high and has a single drop; the lower one is wide and cascades like a veil. A marked footpath leads there in about 35 minutes from the parking lot near Sv. Andrej. From the parking lots in the village center, the walk takes about an hour. The difference in travel time makes the starting point a practical consideration when planning your visit.
A signposted, 0.5-kilometer access trail leads to the Slap v Ledenem grabnu waterfall, ending at a prepared viewpoint. Goli vrh, by contrast, is a steep but technically easy viewpoint above the Jezersko valley on the Austrian border. Mountain conditions can change with the seasons.
Farmsteads, Huts and Churches
More than 500 years old, Jenkova Kasarna was originally built as accommodation for traveling merchants journeying between Carniola and Carinthia. Today, the building houses an ethnographic museum with collections of everyday objects and equipment, an exhibition on the history of mountaineering, and preserved inscriptions left by travelers in the 16th century. If you are planning a museum visit, check visiting arrangements in advance.
Češka koča officially opened on July 26, 1900. It stands beneath the north faces of the Grintovci and has retained its original design despite later renovations. The marked approach passes behind Planšarsko jezero via the Ancel farmstead; the walk from the parking lot takes about an hour and a half. Trail conditions may change, so it is worth checking the latest conditions before setting out.
Šenkova domačija preserves the layout of a self-sufficient medieval farming settlement, including most of its former buildings. Stara cerkev sv. Ožbolta offers another glimpse into architectural and cultural history: its 14th-century frescoes are considered the oldest in Slovenia. The church can be reached by a paved road from the main junction at the Karničar farmstead. During restoration work in 2010, 15th-century frescoes were discovered in Cerkev sv. Andreja.
Seasonal Activities and Events
For cyclists, Kolesarski park Jezersko is located at the family ski area in Park Jezersko and caters to all ability levels. Bike Park Jezersko also includes a 400-meter blue flow trail for beginners. Check operating details before visiting.
Ovčarski bal traditionally takes place each year on the second Sunday in August and is presented as Slovenia’s oldest ethnographic event. The 2026 program included customs associated with life on the mountain pasture, the sheep’s descent into the valley, sheep-wool processing and traditional dishes prepared over an open fire. Program details may change from one edition to another, so check event dates before traveling.
TIC Jezersko and Zgornje Jezersko can provide guidance on guided visits, walks and hiking tours, bicycle and hiking-equipment rentals, and maps. These visitor services may also change; check what is currently available in advance.
