Marked cycling routes, activities at Krvavec and museums in town give Cerklje Na Gorenjskem a range of different ways to explore. The options also differ in the specific routes, themes and conditions you can plan for in advance.

Cycling: Routes Across the Plains and Hills

Cerklje’s cycling network includes eight marked routes across the plains and hills. A map is available in the centre, in front of Petrovčeva hiša. For a tour with a stated distance, the Cerklje–Jezerca–Cerklje route covers 27.2 kilometres to Planina Jezerca and back along the same route; the elevation gain is 1,020 metres. Another circular route starts in Cerklje, heads to Zgornji Brnik and returns along field paths through Vašca. This gives you a choice between a route with a clearly stated distance and elevation gain and one that passes through several named places. Markings and conditions may change.

Krvavec Bike Park has 27 kilometres of marked cycling trails, as well as downhill runs for different ability levels. The Krvavec Summer Park adds seasonal activities, including an adventure park and rides on mountain go-karts, micro-scooters and bicycles. Before travelling, check whether these seasonal activities are available during your visit. Krvavec is also a mountain ski resort and the closest ski resort to Ljubljana.

Hiking Trails and Nature

Cerklje Na Gorenjskem is a starting point for numerous hiking and cycling routes, as well as climbs to the Krvavec ski resort. Themed walking trail Under the Forest Canopy passes through the municipality and focuses on its nature, cultural heritage and other sights. Large parts of this culturally rich area are protected as natural assets and included in Natura 2000. Check the route before your visit, as trail information may change.

The Lahovče and Češnjevek ponds offer their own focus on nature and leisure: together with the surrounding forest and other semi-natural vegetation, they provide a refuge for various animal species. The ponds are also used for fish farming and fishing for beginners and experienced anglers; local rules may apply to fishing access. Češnjevek Pond is part of the Natura 2000 site. This makes excursions around the municipality different from a visit focused mainly on cycling routes or the mountain area.

Museums, Local History and Events

Hribarjeva Villa opened as a municipal museum and is dedicated to local history and Ivan Hribar. Its permanent exhibitions explore Hribar’s political, social and personal legacy and the significance of Cerklje. Another place to visit in the centre is Petrovčeva hiša, which houses the tourist information centre, a gallery, a museum and a library. The museum displays archaeological and ethnological collections, while the gallery hosts art exhibitions. Each institution may have its own opening hours.

Regular guided tours of the museum exhibitions in Cerklje take place on Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m.; advance booking is required. As tour arrangements may change, check the date before your visit. Guided walks in the centre also include the Baroque Church of the Assumption; their content may change.

Borštnik House and Strmol Castle offer further insights into local history. Following conservation restoration, Borštnik House retains its original floors, wall paintings, joinery and heating elements. Exhibition panels provide information about Ignacij Borštnik and the way of life in a house like this more than 100 years ago. Strmol Castle and its park form a well-preserved ensemble at the foot of Dvorjanski hrib; its collection includes historic furniture, paintings and other antiques. Check access to guided tours separately.

The events calendar also offers seasonal highlights: Zaigrajmo v pomlad z Godbo Cerklje is a concert held every spring. Before Easter, Petrovčeva hiša displays traditional Easter and spring decorations each year, passing on knowledge and traditions from one generation to the next. Dates may vary from year to year.

When choosing a hotel, you can match these interests to your travel plans: marked cycling routes, activities at Krvavec, nature or local culture. This way, you can start your search with the experiences that matter for your stay.
