Rižana brings together the source area of the river of the same name, a long history of milling and various ways to explore the landscape. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the different types of excursions: one circular route starts and ends in Rižana, several cycling routes are described by length and difficulty, and the valley is particularly suitable for excursions and exploring nature in summer.

Springs and protected nature

The source of the Rižana consists of several interconnected spring structures. In the source area, Zvorček is the most important spring and is also a natural feature of national significance. This draws attention both to the source’s multi-part structure and to one particularly prominent natural feature and its significance for the source area.

The Rižana River is part of the Natura 2000 site and an ecologically important area that provides a habitat for several endangered animal species. The Rižana Natura 2000 site includes, among others, the long-fingered bat and the Primorski koščak (Koščenec). Species lists may be revised when protected-area data is updated.

Mills along the river

There used to be 34 mills along the Rižana. This number gives the history of milling a concrete dimension and draws attention to the river’s former use. For those interested in culture, this history adds another perspective to the area’s natural features.

The “Od mlina do mlina” educational trail offers insights into the history and workings of the mills along the Rižana River. It explores two questions: What role did the mills play in the area’s history, and how did they work? Anyone interested in these connections can consider the educational trail a focus in its own right, alongside exploring nature.

Routes and excursions

The Rižana River valley is particularly suitable for excursions in summer and offers opportunities to explore nature. One of the routes mentioned is the “Krožna pot gradov” circular route, which starts and ends in Rižana. When planning a trip, take local trail conditions into account.

For cyclists, the challenging, 83-kilometre “Čez Istro za zahtevne (K13)” route passes through Rižana. The “Po poti okrog Tinjana (K2)” route is rated as moderately difficult; it covers 38 kilometres and starts and ends in Koper. The routes differ clearly in length and difficulty rating, making it easy to compare them when choosing the desired trip length. Route details may change if a route is revised.

On the K2, a field track leads to a scenic stretch with weirs on the Rižana. Trail surfaces and access points may change seasonally; check conditions before planning to visit this stretch. Near the village of Rižana, paths through the fields lead to the river. Informal access points there may change as a result of farming and water levels. Check locally if you intend to use this access point.
