Hrastovlje is a destination for travellers who want to explore the village’s character, cultural history and landscape together. Stone houses, densely built lanes and portals made of white Karst stone shape the village. Around the Church of the Holy Trinity, the landscape is typical of the Karst, with red earth, stone walls and vineyards. This offers two different ways to choose what to focus on: the church’s rich heritage and the viewpoints along the named trails.

Church of the Holy Trinity

In January 2026, the church was designated a cultural monument of national importance. Its fresco cycle was painted by Janez iz Kastva in 1490. The extensive medieval frescoes include the famous Dance of Death. The surviving Glagolitic and Latin inscriptions also make the church a remarkable place to explore history: they are considered valuable historical sources. The frescoes and inscriptions represent different kinds of surviving evidence. If you are interested in Hrastovlje’s cultural heritage, the church is a good focal point.

To protect the painted surfaces and maintain a suitable indoor climate, visits to the church are limited to a maximum of 25 people at a time. Practical arrangements for visits may vary; check the current visiting information in advance.

Šavrinka Tradition and Village History

Another cultural highlight is the Šavrinka statue by academic sculptor Jože Pohlen. It stands on the hill opposite the Church of the Holy Trinity, on the road to Dol. Pohlen gifted the statue to Hrastovlje in 1990 as a symbol of Slovenian Istria. Its name points to the history of Šavrinka women traders, which connects Hrastovlje with other Istrian villages.

The Šavrinke were young women and girls from Slovenian Istria. In coastal towns, they worked as domestic helpers or sold various agricultural products. Their work also included transporting goods between central Istria and the coastal towns. Trade and work thus complement the artistic perspective on Hrastovlje with a regional history.

Views Along the Trails

The trails also offer different perspectives. The P2 trail leads to a viewpoint with views of Koper, Trieste and large parts of Istria. The Galerija Pohlen is also located at a fork in the P2 trail. The P4 trail offers views of the Karst Edge, inland Istria and the Bay of Koper. The long Kuk–Lačna ridge also affords views across this landscape. If you include viewpoints in your plans, you can choose based on the landscape you want to see: the P2 foregrounds the cities mentioned and sweeping views across Istria, while the P4 offers views of the Karst Edge, the interior and the bay.
