In Dekani, sacred architectural history and cycling routes offer distinct reasons to visit. The Church of the Assumption combines Gothic features with a natural-stone vault and a later-built bell tower; a 19th-century chapel stands in the Dekani cemetery. For tours, K5 offers a 27-kilometre circular cycling route, while the Parenzana is a 123-kilometre cycling and hiking trail. An annual mass hike in early October adds another option. Which of these interests shapes your stay makes a difference when planning.

Gothic Church and Sacred Architectural History

The Church of the Assumption in Dekani is a single-nave Gothic church dating from the 13th century. “Single-nave” describes a floor plan with one main nave; the presbytery, or choir, has a natural-stone vault. The coats of arms of Bishop Valaresso and other families hang from this vault. The church therefore offers both a distinctive overall form and specific interior details: a single-nave structure and a presbytery with a vaulted ceiling and coats of arms.

The church has a 25-metre-high bell tower in the style of an Aquileian bell tower, built in 1841. The Dekani cemetery is also home to the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in 1858. The dates distinguish the different construction phases: the church dates from the 13th century, while the tower and cemetery chapel were built in the 19th century. This makes it possible to place the Gothic church and the later sacred buildings in their respective periods without treating them as a single construction phase.

Cycling Routes on Different Scales

The “Pot na Tinjan – od morja do kamna” (K5) circular cycling route is 27 kilometres long and passes through Miši in Dekani. It includes challenging climbs and views of the Gulf of Trieste, the Gulf of Koper, the Osp Valley and the Karst Edge. Both distance and climbs are important when assessing the tour: the route combines a clearly stated distance with a challenging profile. The four viewpoints also give a concrete sense of the varied landscapes along the way.

The Parenzana, also known as “Pot zdravja in prijateljstva,” is a 123-kilometre cycling and hiking trail. It follows a former narrow-gauge railway from Trieste through Slovenia to Poreč. It leads to Dekani along a road closed to cars; check current route conditions before setting out. The routes differ considerably in both length and type: K5 is a 27-kilometre circular cycling route with challenging climbs, while the Parenzana is a 123-kilometre trail for cycling and hiking along a former railway line.

Hiking in Early October

Every year in early October, the Dekani Tourist Association organises a traditional mass hike on the Dekani–Tinjan–Dekani circular route. Its regular seasonal timing and named circular route provide a different planning framework from the cycling routes. If you are travelling for the hike, confirm the exact event date locally in advance.
