At the head of the Kamniška Bistrica alpine valley, Dom v Kamniški Bistrici stands just above a small lake fed by several karst springs. From the lodge, you can enjoy views of the Kamnik Alps, which surround the valley. The river, spring and mountain scenery shape what there is to discover here; options range from a short stroll to a mountain hiking trail.

River, Spring and Alpine Scenery

The Kamniška Bistrica River is considered one of Slovenia’s cleanest rivers. At the spring, you can see the snow-covered peaks around it in winter. If you wish to drink the spring water, first check the local drinking water guidance. A paved road runs through the valley to the mountain lodge in Kamniška Bistrica; check current road conditions locally.

Walks and Hiking Destinations

The Koželjeva footpath takes you past mountain stream tributaries and smaller hidden springs throughout the Kamniška Bistrica valley. Check local trail conditions before setting out. One named mountain route is the Kamniška Bistrica–Žagana peč–Kokrsko sedlo trail: it starts at Dom v Kamniški Bistrici and is classified as an easy mountain hiking trail.

Žagana peč is a glacial erratic; the stated walking time from the lodge is 45 minutes. Sivnica is also a glacial erratic and is described as the largest erratic in Slovenia. The stated walking time from the lodge to the memorial park for those who lost their lives in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps is 20 minutes. These times provide two different points of reference to help you choose a destination.

A walk of just a few minutes along Predaselj Gorge offers views of the riverbed and the crystal-clear waters of the Kamniška Bistrica. Wear suitable footwear. Veliki and Mali Predaselj form the narrowest section of the riverbed; the Veliki Predaselj section is 30 metres deep. A waterfall about 30 metres high lies in a side valley of the Kamniška Bela stream and is a relatively accessible hiking destination. Check local trail conditions there before hiking, too.

For a different kind of gorge experience, mountain rescuers can, by prior arrangement, lower visitors into Predaselj Gorge on a rope and guide them along a steel cable. Confirm the arrangements and how the activity will be carried out in advance. Another experience combines cycling, hiking, relaxation and Kneipp treatments based on the Kneipp method. The route runs from Keršmančev Park to the source of the Kamniška Bistrica; confirm current availability before booking.

Hunting History and Regional Cuisine

The hunting lodge of King Alexander stands close to the spring. It was designed in 1933 to plans by Jože Plečnik. The stone table Archduke’s Table (Firštova miza) in the valley is named after a meal shared there by Archduke Charles II and his entourage following a hunting expedition. Regional dishes also reflect the hunting tradition: the princely game goulash (Firštov divjačinski golaž) recalls this history, and the recipe for chamois soup comes from the Kamniška Bistrica valley. You can try the soup at the Pri planinskem orlu guesthouse; check before your visit whether it is being served.
