Discover Kamnik through its art, city history and architecture. Museums and galleries offer different perspectives on time and themes, alongside historic buildings, a festival, and opportunities for cultural and nature experiences. When choosing what to do, you can follow your interests: a cultural walk, art spanning several centuries, architectural details or outdoor activities each offer a different focus.
Museums, Art and Cultural History
The exhibition rooms of the Intermunicipal Museum Kamnik are located in Zaprice Castle above Kamnik, near the railway station and bus stations. The Cultural Three-M (3 M) walk passes through the museum’s units; you can choose the order of the stops. The exhibition Reflections of Kamnik’s Millennia includes educational areas where you can learn about Roman games, coinage, ancient measurements and legends.
The Miha Maleš Gallery presents a permanent exhibition on Kamnik’s art history from the 18th to the 20th century. It features works of sculpture, painting, architecture and photography. By contrast, the View Gallery in the centre of Kamnik is an exhibition space for contemporary artistic work. The collection’s history also includes Miha Maleš’s donation: in 1979, he gave the city of Kamnik a total of 2,590 works; in 1980, the municipality housed the extensive donation in a town house at Glavni trg 2.
Crafts and Architecture in the City
Šutna Street preserves characteristic shop signs and other traces of craftsmanship. The exhibition in Rudolf Maister’s birthplace occupies part of the ground floor of a 19th-century town house at Šutna 23, near the parish church of Šutna. In the Franciscan monastery in Kamnik, the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre is a work by Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. The Franciscan Library preserves around 10,000 books and volumes printed before the end of the 18th century. Kamnik also retains a two-storey Romanesque chapel with a crypt, now considered one of the city’s most important landmarks.
Views and Time Outdoors
A viewpoint in Kamnik offers views of the city centre and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The Kamnik–Godič cycling route is 3.2 kilometres long and runs mostly along the Kamniška Bistrica River. These offer two different ways to spend time outdoors: a viewpoint with views of the city and the Alps, and a cycling route that mostly follows the river.
Near Kamnik, the source of the Kamniška Bistrica River lies in the valley of the same name. An asphalt road runs through the valley to the mountain hut in Kamniška Bistrica. Also nearby, in a side valley of the Kamniška Bela stream, is the approximately 30-metre-high Orglice Waterfall. The pools below the waterfall are relatively easy to reach, and the area is suitable for hiking.
Urban leisure options are also worth noting: the municipal swimming pool is near the Old Town. At Pod Skalo, sand courts for beach volleyball are located close to the city centre, next to the municipal Olympic swimming pool.
Festival and Culinary Tour
The Dnevi narodnih noš in oblačilne dediščine festival dates back to 1966. It attracts more than 30,000 visitors each year, although visitor numbers may vary from year to year. The programme and dates also differ each year. If the festival is a factor in choosing your travel dates, check the specific event days before planning your trip.
A culinary tour in Kamnik centres on four breweries and includes matching beer snacks. If you want to make this tour a firm part of your plans, check its availability in advance.
