In Celje, a medieval castle, Roman remains and exhibitions on the city's history come together. There are also places dedicated to contemporary art, nature and interactive discovery. So if you are considering a trip to Celje, you can choose from a wide range of interests rather than focusing your stay on a single attraction.

Castle, Roman Traces and City History

Celje Castle is the largest medieval castle in Slovenia and one of the city's best-known landmarks. Visitors can explore the Friderik Tower, exhibitions and the remains of the castle halls; guided tours are also available. The castle offers a distinctive way to learn about the medieval past. The historic city centre also contains remains of an ancient Roman road, medieval towers and a notable architectural heritage. Marijino znamenje was erected in 1776 and was Celje's first public monument.

At the Princely Palace, the exhibition “Celeia - a town beneath today's town” offers a different historical perspective: it is the largest presentation to date of the remains of Roman Celeia preserved on site. The permanent exhibition “The Counts of Celje” is also housed in the palace. The Celje Regional Museum complements these themes with archaeological, historical and art-historical collections spanning from prehistory to the First World War.

Museums and Personal Places of Remembrance

The permanent exhibition “Living in Celje” tells the story of the city and its residents in the 20th century. It also features a recreated city street with craft businesses and workshops, where master craftspeople occasionally give demonstrations. The Centre for Contemporary Arts accepts bookings for guided tours of current exhibitions; advance booking is recommended. The Centre also manages the Celje Gallery of Contemporary Art.

Stari Pisker is a memorial site and an off-site unit of the Museum of Recent History Celje. The museum section focuses on 35 original farewell letters written by hostages from the Celje area. The memorial rooms are located in a prison that is still in operation, so a visit must be arranged in advance. This specific visitor requirement sets Stari Pisker apart from the other museum highlights and should be factored into your plans.

The Photo House Pelikan also connects history with a distinctive type of building: the original house, dating from 1899, is a protected cultural monument and serves as an outpost of the Celje Museum of Recent History on Razlagova Street. Upstairs is a skylit studio where photographs can still be taken; it is one of the few studios of its kind in Europe. If you specifically plan to make use of the photographic facilities, confirm what is currently available in advance.

The Alma Karlin Memorial House in Pečovnik was renovated and opened as a public memorial house in 2014. It houses the exhibition “Alma M. Karlin's Lonely Journey” and hosts cultural events, including the Summer in Celje festival. The programme may change, so check it if you plan your trip around a particular date.

Trails, Recreation and Interactive Discovery

The Celje City Forest has seven adventure-oriented recreational trails and an educational and adventure trail. The Celje City Forest Treehouse is open to individual visitors and groups. Workshops, concerts and poetry readings are often held there; the programme may vary by season. The trails and events offer different ways to spend time beyond the museums.

Celjska Koča is a hill and recreation area accessible on foot, by bicycle or by car. Its zipline is considered one of the longest in Slovenia. The area around Celjska Koča has well-maintained hiking and cycling trails, an adventure park and a summer toboggan run. The “Celje trails” downhill mountain-bike routes are a separate attraction, located below Osenica Hill. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

At Tropska hiša, visitors can explore ecosystems from around the world and a Mesozoic ecosystem featuring moving models of prehistoric reptiles. A programme also gives visitors the opportunity to get to know, experience and touch animals; the selection is based on recommendations and participants' wishes. Arrangements may need to be made in advance. Herman's Den offers a different focus: it is a children's museum and a space for children's creative activities. Tehnopark Celje is the first and largest park for science, technology and innovation, with opportunities to play, learn, socialise and explore.

When choosing what to focus on, it helps to keep these differences in mind: Celje combines Roman and medieval history with places of remembrance, exhibitions and recreational activities. Check registration requirements, guided tours, events or the current availability of individual activities according to your plans.
