Boleráz is located in the Trnavská pahorkatina, about 14 km northwest of the district town of Trnava. Three main themes provide a guide to planning your trip: church architecture, archaeological traces and varied landscape forms. Recurring cultural events and the water reservoir add to this picture. Depending on whether you want to focus on architectural history, local culture or the landscape, you can give these themes different emphasis.

Landscape between hills and plain

The northern part of the cadastral area belongs to the Podmalokarpatská pahorkatina and has the characteristics of a lowland hilly landscape. In the south, in the Trnavská tabuľa, the landscape is instead a gently rolling plain. The contrast between the hillier north and rolling south is a striking spatial difference within the area. It is complemented by the Trnávka stream, which crosses Boleráz’s treeless area in a shallow, wide valley. The hills, rolling plain and broad valley thus form three distinct landscape features.

Churches and their architectural history

The parish church of Saint Michael the Archangel has a specific historical timeline. The foundation stone of the present-day church was laid on 1 May 1786, and construction was completed on 15 September 1787. The main altar is dominated by a statue of Saint Michael the Archangel slaying a dragon. This church thus draws attention both for its precisely dated construction history and for its striking religious motif.

Another architectural landmark is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Klčovany (Boleráz). It is a Baroque single-nave church with a built-in tower and was restored in 1856. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave; the built-in tower is a distinct feature of its design. The two churches can therefore be distinguished by different details: the parish church by its construction date and altar motif, and the church in Klčovany by its style, interior layout, tower and restoration.

Archaeological traces

There are specific points of reference for early settlement, too. At Hradisko Zámok, about 1 km southwest of Boleráz, a fortified settlement stood around 1500 BC, with a rampart, palisades and a pointed ditch. The site was later disturbed by land use. The individual defensive features add a sense of what the site was like to the information about its date.

In addition, at least five settlement sites in Boleráz are associated with the Boleráz group; none has been systematically investigated. Thus, the archaeological history of the town includes both a specific example of a fortified settlement and several other sites associated with this group.

Cultural calendar, water and sport

The regular cultural calendar includes the traditional “Pochovávanie basy” before the start of Lent and celebrations for the feast of Saint Catherine. Pochovávanie basy takes place before Lent begins, while the Catherine celebrations are another named occasion. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the exact dates in advance.

The Boleráz water reservoir was built in the 1960s. As well as serving a recreational purpose, it plays a role in flood protection. Conditions for water sports on the reservoir are considered very good. Recreation, flood protection and a specific connection with water sports are therefore all part of its role.

The TJ Slavoj Boleráz sports complex includes a football pitch and other sports facilities. The specific facilities may change if planned improvements are carried out. The sports offerings are clearly distinct: the complex has designated sports facilities, while conditions for water sports at the reservoir are rated.
