Veľké Blahovo can be explored through two themes: the landscape of the old Danube arms and the history of the village. The natural environment is defined by protected wetlands and waterways, while the church, wayside chapel and musician Ján Bihari offer tangible connections to local history. You can therefore consider nature and culture as distinct focuses for your stay.

Water landscapes and protected habitats

The Klátovské rameno National Nature Reserve extends into the cadastral territory of Veľké Blahovo. It is a representative example of a meandering lowland river with rare aquatic and wetland communities. The entire reserve covers 306.44 hectares and is subject to protection levels 4 and 5. Habitats in Klátovské rameno also include floodplain forests and communities of floating or submerged aquatic plants.

Remnants of old Danube arms can be seen in Veľké Blahovo and its cadastral territory. Follow their course and you will reach the present-day Danube. The protected area of Plytčiny is also located in the cadastral territory. Protected bird species at Klátovské rameno include the kingfisher, mute swan and little grebe. Bird sightings may vary depending on the season.

The Malý Dunaj water trail lists the Veľké Blahovo Small Hydropower Plant as a named stop. At this location, the standing water and the nearby mouth of the Čierna voda are breeding grounds for waterbirds. This stop therefore combines a trail station with an ecological feature of the waterway environment.

Buildings and local history

The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity is a Baroque building dating from 1761 and was renovated in the 20th century. Its main altar features an image of the Holy Trinity from 1883. The construction, renovation and altarpiece thus represent different historical periods.

The church grounds contain a family crypt belonging to the Csiba family, with a tombstone. A wayside chapel also stands near the church: a small masonry structure with a triangular floor plan. Its semicircular niches contain polychrome images of saints. The church and chapel illustrate different scales of sacred architecture in the village. Polychrome means multicoloured.

Ján Bihari is part of the village’s personal history: he was a musician and was born in Veľké Blahovo on 21 October 1764. His biography adds another local connection to the architectural history.
