Trhová Hradská can be explored through several themes: the architectural history of the Church of St Anthony of Padua, historic monuments in the village landscape, and the rivers and protected areas nearby. Folk songs and a choir that performs at local events also add to its appeal. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether culture, nature or cycling will be your main focus.
Rivers and protected nature
The Malý Dunaj flows through Trhová Hradská, and the Klátovské rameno runs through the cadastral area. Part of this area lies within the Klátovské rameno National Nature Reserve. The fifth level of protection applies there, and the third level applies in the 100-metre-wide protective zone. The reserve covers 306.4 hectares and protects floodplain forests, standing-water habitats, and lowland and mountain meadows.
Rare and protected species at Klátovské rameno include the European fire-bellied toad, Eurasian otter, mute swan, grey heron, Eurasian coot and white stork. This list describes the diversity of species found there; it does not guarantee that you will see any particular one. Together with the two river courses, the protected area gives Trhová Hradská’s natural setting a tangible connection to the landscape.
Church and architectural history
At the centre of Trhová Hradská stands the Church of St Anthony of Padua, set in a well-kept church garden. It was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1757 and remodelled again in 1905–1906. Its architectural features include a Greek-cross floor plan, an Art Nouveau interior and predominantly Neo-Romanesque exterior elements. Different design features thus come together in one building, offering a way to explore the village through its architectural history.
Older monuments can also be found around the church: a sandstone Pietà from 1883 stands in front of the church, and a Holy Trinity column dating from 1846 is in the church garden. The two dates point to different periods in local history. For a stay focused on cultural heritage, the church, garden and these monuments make a natural centrepiece.
Statues and historic landmarks
The statue of St Vendel dates from 1863 and is a preserved, well-maintained local monument. It stands at the junction on the main road towards Nyárasd, where the road to Nádszeg branches off. Its precise location makes the junction a useful landmark when looking for the statue. Another roadside statue, depicting St Florian by A. Brandl, was made in 1873. Beside the road to Topoľníky there is also a statue of St John of Nepomuk dating from 1739.
A monument to Lajos Kossuth was erected in 1994. Kossuth visited Trhová Hradská in 1848, when he recruited soldiers there. The village’s history also includes earlier markets: in the 19th century, its livestock markets were widely known in the surrounding area. These references belong to the village’s past and do not describe current events.
Folk songs and local events
The Vásárúti Dalárda was founded in January 2007 and keeps alive folk songs passed down by earlier generations in the Csallóköz region. The group performs at around 25 events a year on average. It traditionally appears at the local strudel festival and also performs at the Advent concert in the church. If you would like to plan your trip around a performance, check the specific event dates in advance.
Two cycling routes, two distances
The 14 km main route IX runs through Kútniky, Dunajský Klátov, Trhová Hradská, Horné Mýto and Ohrady Ostrov (Kürti sziget). The marked, flat cycling route IX/4 also connects Trhová Hradská with Horné Mýto (Klátovské rameno). This 2.1 km route is paved and suitable for all types of bicycle. Based on the stated distances, IX/4 is the shorter of the two routes; main route IX offers the longer option. This information can help you tailor your cycling plans to your preferred distance without treating the two routes as one.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can choose your main focus: architecture and monuments, nature, or one of the specifically named cycling routes.
