Selec lies at an altitude of 319 metres in a mountain basin at the end of the Selecký potok valley; the main and subsidiary ridges of the Považský Inovec surround the village. Three interests give you a clear direction when choosing what to see: natural monuments, cycling in the valley, and architectural and memorial heritage. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay in Selec, these highlights can help you shape your trip around your interests.

Mountain Landscape and Natural Monuments

Selecké kamenné more is a quartzite boulder field west of the main summit of the Považský Inovec. It was designated a natural monument in 1985, covers 4.83 hectares, and has the highest, fifth level of protection. Geologically, the site is considered unique. It includes open, dying oak stands, with heather and bilberries growing in the undergrowth. Locally, the boulder field is also called Sokolova skala. A rare archaeological site lies nearby, whose significance is also connected with a nearby hillfort.

Another natural monument is the Selecký potok. It was designated in 1984, covers 4.52 hectares, and lies at an altitude of 232 to 332 metres. The protected area extends across Selec and Veľké Stankovce; riparian vegetation has been preserved along the upper section of the foothill stream. The Považský Inovec Nature Reserve is also part of the area’s natural character. On the western slopes of the highest summit in the range, beech stands more than a hundred years old provide a habitat for rare and protected animal species. Thus, alongside the geology of the boulder field, the stream banks and old beech stands offer distinct natural features.

Cycling and Routes

An 8-kilometre paved cycling route runs through the Selecká Valley, from Trenčianske Stankovce to the upper end of Selec, near a spring. Check the route conditions locally before setting out. At the end of the village, a road that also serves as a cycling route leads to a forestry office with the first information board of the Inovec educational trail. The board describes a forest railway that is no longer in operation.

The published Route 11, Mníchova Lehota–Inovec–Palúch–Selec, ends in Selec; from there, you can continue by a suitable bus. Check bus connections separately.

Buildings and Local History

The Church of St. Bartholomew in Selec is a Late Gothic building dating from 1504. It houses a one-manual organ with seven stops. Martin Šaško of Brezová pod Bradlom built it in 1882–1883 together with his son Ján; it is considered the last organ he built. A stone statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands near the church. The statue and its pedestal were erected in 1798. The current statue is a replica of the late 18th century; the original pedestal has been preserved and restored.

Opposite the church, a memorial commemorates residents of Selec who were deported by the Nazis to concentration camps in November 1944; 43 did not return. The memorial, featuring a sculpture of a dying person and a plaque bearing the victims’ names, was solemnly unveiled in 1969 on the 25th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising. It is listed in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic under number 2 426/0.

The Neoclassical Protestant bell tower (Zvonica), dating from the late 18th century, has been a national cultural monument since 2011. It houses a unique bell from 1900, made at the bell foundry in Šoporňa. The area’s cultural history also includes traditional crafts: residents made wooden objects, and local spoon-makers were well known. Traditional customs are still observed in Selec on public holidays; this makes the village one of the few in Slovakia to maintain them. Check locally for specific events on individual holidays.
