Route 13 is rated easy, while Route 11 is rated moderate. This gives you a clear choice when planning a hike in Mníchova Lehota; churches, monastery ruins and the remains of a former mountain railway offer other points of interest.
Hiking in Mníchova Lehota
The cadastral area of Mníchova Lehota lies in both the Strážovské vrchy mountains and the Považský Inovec range. The forests around the village are popular destinations for hiking, mushroom picking and hunting. A trailhead for hikes and climbs into the Považský Inovec massif is located by Motorest Radar.
Route 13 leads from Soblahov via Chata pod Ostrým vrchom to Mníchova Lehota. This easy hike is 8 kilometres long, involves 492 metres of elevation gain and has a stated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. It passes through beech forests, goes by the limestone crag Macková and then descends to Mníchova Lehota.
Route 11 runs via Inovec, Palúch and Selec and is rated moderate. If you are choosing between the two routes by difficulty, you will find one easy and one moderate option. Conditions and markings on Route 13 may change; check both before setting off.
A publicly accessible Kyselka spring is located in Krásna dolina. Check the spring’s conditions before your visit. This lets you plan the detour as a separate activity without confusing it with one of the hiking routes described.
Churches and historical traces
The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in the mid-14th century and added to the Slovak Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments in 1963. Beside the church is a Lourdes grotto built from stones from the cave. A filial church in Mníchova Lehota was consecrated on 27 May 2018 by Mons. Viliam Judák, Bishop of Nitra.
Visible ruins of a monastery remain at Kostelec; no walls are standing today. The ruins were mentioned as early as the 1829 canonical visitation by Bishop Vurum of Nitra. Another trace of the area’s distant past is the Middle Palaeolithic Neanderthal tools found in Mníchova Lehota.
The Náučný chodník educational trail has eleven numbered stops: Blaškovec, Kostelec, Amfiteáter, Cintorin, Cigánsky járek, Lipa, Dolný mlyn, Jágrovec, Konzum, Kultúrny dom and Kostol. These names offer practical orientation for anyone interested in the designated points along the trail.
Historic routes and travel planning
The former Trenčín–Selec mountain railway ran through Mníchova Lehota. Several sections of the route and bridge remains have survived and are now used by nature lovers and cyclists. The Trenčianske folklórne slávnosti have been held in the amphitheatre in Mníchova Lehota since 1973. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates.
The railway station is a landmark for both hikes: Route 11 starts there, and Route 13 ends there. You can return from Mníchova Lehota to Trenčín by train or bus. If you plan this return journey, check the timetables in advance. This allows you to plan your route choice and return journey separately, without assuming a particular connection or departure time.
